Broad period: EARLY MEDIEVAL
County: Greater London Authority
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
An incomplete large bone pin or needle, possibly made from a pig fibula. One end has been sharpened to a point (which has broken off) and the opposite end has been carved to form a flat projection with a circular hole drilled into the end. The surface has a brown patina and has suffered abrasion damage.
On one side of the head, just below the hole, is a carved design which appears to be Anglo-Scandinavian style knotwork (photo 2) and which may suggest an early Medieval date for the object.

This longitudinal chamfer peters out with a slight concave curve 31.6mm before the object's terminal. The widest axis is close to the break and measures 8.7mm. At the broken end the object has a thickness of 2.7mm. The break is diagonal and irregular. One of the wider sides also has some of the surface broken away and this may h…

Large Early Medieval - Medieval complete flat bone needle. The needle is long and flat in section, it has a small hole pierced at its broadest end. The bone surface is pitted and has some evidence of the internal spongy structure of the bone on one side. There is a single tool mark on this needle, a linear groove running across the needle above the eye. The bone is a dark brown in colour probably due to its riverine deposition environment. A parallel for this type of needle can be found in MacGregor et al 1999 no.6687, where it is defined as a type of pin beater with a range from the …

A bone needle, probably dating to the Roman period, broken into three fragments. The needle has a flat rectangular-section head, pierced by a rectangular eye, now broken. The head extends to a circular-section stem which tapers and terminates in a point. The needle measures 84mm in length. The head has a width of 5mm and the stem a maximum diameter of 3mm. Although the head is broken, it appears to be a Crummy Type 2 needle (needles with a flat spatulate head) which were used throughout the Roman period.

An incomplete bone needle probably dating to the Roman period. The needle possesses a faceted, but roughly circular-section stem. One of the facets (comprising the left-hand-side of the pin) has a series of at least nine diagonal notches along the length of its face. It is not clear whether these notches are decorative or whether they were formed during the construction of the needle. The stem tapers towards a point at one end. The point is missing. At the other end, the stem flattens to accommodate a faceted rectangular eye. Beyond the eye, the pin flattens further and expands slight…
