An incomplete Post Medieval bone knife handle fragment, dating c. AD 1500-1700. The fragment is sub-rectangular and D-shape in cross-section, with a rounded face, broadly flat underside, tapering sides and rounded edges. It comprises one half of an oval-sectioned knife handle that is broken at one end, making it difficult to estimate how long it would have been. The narrow intact end is flatly finished and curves into the upper face. The two long edges are relatively straight with minimal damage except for some areas of wear. Part of the wider end may be the extremity. Part of the…

There is iron corrosion product at the terminal of the …

Antler or bone knife handle fragment. The straight-ended terminal to the plain broad bevelled side plate from the handle of a large scale tang knife. The identification is prompted by rust staining on the flat inner surface of a plano-convex fragment. A copper alloy rivet of diameter 1.9mm passes through the side plate towards its end, and presumably through the tang and the other plate also. The compact nature of the material suggests its identification as possibly antler. Suggested date: Post-Medieval, 1550-1800 Length: 33.4mm, Width: 23.6mm, Thickness: 6.8mm, Weight: 6.56gms

A curved antler handle probably from a whittle tang knife, probably of Medieval to Modern date. The handle is a cracked tapering tube of antler, which appears to follow the natural curve of the antler. At the narrow end is a corroded part of the iron tang; this end of the antler has been cut off flat and the antler is bevelled externally and internally. There is a wider, cracked circular hole that has an irregular edge at the opposite end of the handle. The handle is hollow for almost all the length. Externally, linear grooves and ridges are evident, probably the natural surface…
