Oyster shell. The bottom half of an edible oyster shell. A seafood diet was introduced or expanded under Roman rule, when British oysters acquired an empire-wide reputation. Oysters remained as a common foodstuff into the early post-medieval period, their availability probably only declining with environmental degradation in industrial times – though Viking Age York contrived to pollute its waterways to an extent which altered the local faunal range significantly. Suggested date: Unknown, Roman to Medieval, 43-1500 Length: 70.5mm, Weight (with adherent soil): 33.69gms

An incomplete bone toggle of uncertain date, possibly Romano-British (100 BC - AD 100), but it could also be later, up to about 1950. It is a cylindrical bone, probably a bird bone, shaped into a tube that is swollen in the centre and waisted at each end. A circular hole perforates the swollen area. The surface is smooth and polished. Length: 41.77mm Thickness: 9.63mm Weight: 2.77g This object was found at a site that has been excavated and which produced Neolithic to Romano-British finds which are now housed in Craven Museum. However…

Animal bone. A small fragment from near the end of a large mammal long bone, with the outer surface on one side and cancellous tissue on the other. Chopping marks appear on a flat surface at the narrower end of the fragment, perhaps indicating a bone split for the extraction of marrow. Fiercely abraded. Suggested date: Unknown, Medieval to Post-Medieval, 1200-1900 Length: 61.5mm, Weight: 18.16gms

Oyster shell. A fragment representing most of the lower shell of a bivalve oyster. Probably food waste, oysters were a common food where available from Roman times onwards, and throughout the medieval period. Their post-medieval currency was still as a food of the poor, and their status as a luxury foodstuff is of relatively recent origin. Suggested date: Unknown, Roman to Medieval, 43-1500 Length: 49mm, Weight: 10.40gms

Two porcine teeth of unknown date. Both are canine teeth, probably from a domestic pig. The largest is 56.8mm long, 9.3mm wide, 28.4mm thick and weighs 8.46g.  The smaller is 39.6mm long, 15.1mm wide, 15.4mm thick and weighs 3.57g. The teeth are most likely to be modern, but are recorded because they were found in the same area as the possible flint tools SWYOR-53A050 and SWYOR-537AB1.

An unidentified object, possibly a tool or decorative object which has been fashioned out of a section of deer antler. The antler, circular in cross section, has a slight curve to it. To one end, the honeycomb bone-like tissue has been removed and a sub-spherical piece of lead has been forcefully inserted, cracking the surrounding antler. This piece of lead protrudes from the antler. On closer inspection it appears that a glue or expanding foam has been used to fix the lead into place, it is not possible to say if this adhesive was a later addition (potentially a makeshift r…

Animal bone. Four large bone fragments. Two lower jaw bones weighing c.370gms and 190gms, a fragment from a socketed pelvic bone weighing c.125gms, and a vertebra weighing 75gms. All are from large mammals, perhaps horse or cow. From the Humber Bank, an area recently producing both human bone from Iron Age or Roman burials and pottery, probably settlement debris. These animal bone fragments are also probably from food or butchery waste. Cursory inspection does not, however, reveal cut-marks or evidence for butchery. Finds dating between the later Iron Age and the Medieval period have …

A curved antler handle probably from a whittle tang knife, probably of Medieval to Modern date. The handle is a cracked tapering tube of antler, which appears to follow the natural curve of the antler. At the narrow end is a corroded part of the iron tang; this end of the antler has been cut off flat and the antler is bevelled externally and internally. There is a wider, cracked circular hole that has an irregular edge at the opposite end of the handle. The handle is hollow for almost all the length. Externally, linear grooves and ridges are evident, probably the natural surface…

Antler offcut. A small sub-rectangular billet cot from the outer side of an antler beam, with a curved outer surface, one cut or split edge, one cut end, broken elsewhere. There is no sign of the saw-cuts which might point to comb-making in the early medieval period, so this is perhaps waste from the making of an object such as a tool handle. The use of antler was restricted by progressive regulation of access to forests throughout the medieval period. Suggested date: Unknown, Medieval to Post-Medieval, 1200-1700 Length: 35.0mm, Width: 15.3mm, Thickness: 6.5mm, Weight: 3.43gms

Part of a cattle bone of uncertain date, but probably not Modern. It is part of a bovine tibia (Jane Richardson, pers comm). The bone shows signs of rodent gnawing in the form of short scratches which are about 9mm long and closely spaced, arranged in small groups. These have made the ends of the bone taper. The bone is 129mm long, 44.3mm wide and 33.7mm thick. It weighs 153.38g. The bone is not fresh, and has weathered to a dark brown colour, especially where it has been gnawed. Only the hard outer bone survives, with the inside being hollow.

Incomplete bone implement of unknown age and function. The object consists of the lower limb bone of a mammal (perhaps a vestigial equid finger) which has been worked into a tapering point with a roughly triangular cross section. The wider end of the bone is smooth and worn, perhaps from usage as an awl. The tip is broken off. The bone implement is smooth and shiny in places, suggesting some age, but closer dating is difficult. It has darker areas of discolouration, probably through contact with the soil. The object measures 101.9mm in length and is 22.8mm at its maximum across the…

There is a triangular hole for the tang in the solid end. The other end is hollow and the walls of the tube have been carved so they taper internally and externally. Length 114.58mm, diameter 25.88mm, weight 63.71g. Whittle tang handles were the most common form of Medieval knife handle until the 15th century, but they are also used today, and there are modern knifes being made with antler handles.…
