Object type: RETOUCHED FLAKE
Broad period: NEOLITHIC
County: East Sussex
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A retouched flint flake of suggested middle Neolithic to early Bronze Age date c. 3300-1000 BC.  The secondary flake is elongated and sub-triangular in plan and cross-section; a small section of cortex surviving at the distal edge which has a chip at the terminal with fresh breaks suggesting more recent damage. The ventral surface is slightly concave with a pronounced bulb of percussion and raised rippling suggested hard hammer working. The dorsal surface has five removal scars with crude removals at the proximal end, possibly damage, but some finer …

Object type: FLAKE
Broad period: BRONZE AGE
County: West Sussex
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A flint waste flake (debitage) probably of late Mesolithic to Neolithic date and reworked at a later Neolithic to Bronze age date. The flint appears to have been hard hammer struck from a secondary flake, with a pronouced bulb of percussion and single striking platform with surviving cortex. On the dorsal face is a deep smooth concave thumb shaped depression with a single arise. There are crude removals, possibly damage at the end of the arise near the distal edge. The flake has been retouched on multiple areas with regular long scaled abrupt retouch comprising four rem…

The ventral face has a low bulb of percussion at the proximal end with shallow rippling across the surface. A small patch of blue-white cortex survives at the distal end of the dorsal face above and within the retouched edge which comprises short scaled semi-abrupt retouch. An almost complete Neolithic flint polished axehead dating c. 4000-2200 BC. The axehead has a lenticular cross section with flake removals evident on both faces, but the surface appears only partially polished. Partial polished surfaces remain on both sides, on the lower face near the cutting edge on one side; and only on a narrow strip running up the centre on the opposing face. There is battering damage on the cutting edge which is completely missing, the remaining surfaces are covered in flake removals with worn arises and red staining on both sides.&n…

Object type: BLADE
Broad period: MESOLITHIC
County: Wiltshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A long flint flake possibly utilised as a blade of late Mesolithic to early Neolithic date, c.8000 - 3300 BC. Description: The blade is formed from a long narrow tertiary flake, which has snapped off at the distal end with an old patinated break and a hinge fracture at the proximal end. It is broadly triangular in cross-section with a slightly concave ventral surface. The bulb of percussion is very low with slight, shallow conchoidal rippling suggesting the use of a soft hammer. The long edges are damaged and chipped with possible short, scaled, abrupt retouch on o…

The assemblage was found in a spoil heap from building activity.  1.  A complete crudely struck tertiary flake with low bulb of percussion, shallow rippling and iron staining near the bulb. There are some crude removals at the distal edge which are probably damage rather than retouch. The flint is dark grey with creamy pale grey areas. A group of 19 flint flakes of probable Neolithic date (c.4000-2200 BC). All the flakes have a semi-glossy patina and most are struck from a dark brown/black translucent flint with cloudy milky beige areas. One flake is different, and of a yellow brown flint. In general there are low bulbs of percussion and shallow rippling and some flakes retain cortex.  The total weight of the assemblage is 103 grams. This assemblage was found within 500m's of two other similar debitage assemblages recorded from the finder: SUSS-12EEC3 and SUSS-12C7ED.

A lithic flake possibly dating to the Lower/Early Middle Paleolithic period c 500,000-180,000 BC. The tertiary flake has been stuck with a hard hammer with a prominent bulb of percussion and rippling on the ventral face. One long edge may have short abrupt retouch, but the removals are irregular and may be damage, so it is suggested this is more likely a waste flake or debitage.  Length: 60.22mm; width: 30.57mm; thickness; 9.53mm and weight: 13.40g. The patination of the flake suggests an early date possibly of the Lower/Early Middle Paleolithic period.
