A broadly circular lead plug/mend for the repair of a damaged vessel. An abraded sherd survives attached. It has a sandy orange fabric with red inclusions, including one large one. Broad period: UNKNOWN
County: Warwickshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A circular lead spindle whorl. The spindle whorl is plano-convex and undecorated. The central perforation for the spindle is approximately 9.8 mm in diamater. It measures 32.06 mm in diameter, 9.5 mm thick and weighs 43.1 grams. It is plain and undecorated. As such objects were used for a wide period of time, from the Roman period through to the post-medieval, the dating for this plain example is uncertain.

The shield has a cross-hatch design etched into the top left and bottom right quarters - there may be a design in the two remaining quarters but they are unclear. The front disc is depicted with St George and the dragon (only part of the dragon is visible). This stamp shows it was approved by an alnager, a person who ensured that the right length of cloth was supplied in the bale before giving the bale the seal as a mark of approval so it could be sold on. The seal dates from the 17th century, until the alnager's post was abolished in 1699.
