A lead alloy weight. It has been formed by rolling a sub circular flat piece of lead alloy, possibly around a narrow diameter former. Hence the narrowing 'flap' of material can be seen along one side of the narrow weight, basicaly cylindrical in shape but wider in the centre than the ends. It has an even, light patina.Such weights were used over a long period of time, possibly as fishing weights, amongst other applications.
Dimensions: It is 34mm long and 15mm in diameter, the central hole is 5mm diameter, and it weighs 24.3g

It consists of a flat, sub-rectangular piece of lead, with the long edges folded inwards to create a flat, rectangular tube with a longitudinal seam along one side. A complete stone object, possibly a loom weight for a warp weighted loom of Uncertain date (AD 1066-1500). The object is composed of fine grained sandstone, is roughly semi-circular in plan though it would have been sub-circular in form, the object has been broken across the midsection. The object retains an off centre perforation. The object has a convex upper and roughly flattened base.
Loom weights were used to keep the vertical threads, or warp, tight on a loom during weaving while the horizontal thread, or weft, was passed through the warp.

A cast lead alloy weight dating from the Roman period (c.AD 43-410). The object is circular in plan one face is stamped with the Roman numeral II, while the opposite face is undecorated. The object has a whitish brown patina and weighs 54g.
Biggs, N. & Withers, P. (2000) note that weights of this type with numerals are consistent with the Roman weight-system as well as the averdepois system, thus they could equally be 16th century. The weight was discovered in a location where a Roman brooch and Roman coin were also found nearby suggesting that the weight may well be Roman.

The rest of the face appears smoothed. The opposite face is rough and unworked. The central recess has a diameter of 10mm.

A complete lead alloy trade weight possibly dating to the Roman period (c.AD 43-410) or post-medieval period (c.AD 1500-1600).
The object is circular in plan and is flat on both faces. One face has a raised rim and the other crudely inscribed or stamped Roman numerals, either 'III' or 'II V', indicating mass denomination.
These weights can date from the Romano - British period but can also be dated to the 16th Century. Biggs and Withers explain that weights such as this one are comparative to examples discovered in Chester and are termed the 'Chester Types'. These Chester types …

An incomplete stone Loom Weight of probable Medieval date (AD 1066-1500). The weight is an irregular circle in plan and sub-rectangular in cross section. It has an off-centre perforated / drilled circular hole. The central hole is crisp and straight edged. There is a small chip resulting in the loss of a portion of the outer edge of the object.
It is very difficult to date this type of artefact as they are common finds from most archaeological periods. This example is relatively light and small compared to others. A possible prehistoric date could be attributed, however any distinc…
