Complete iron horseshoe of modern date (c. AD 1850-1920). With a broadly oval plan and break at its rear end, this horseshoe has a protruding toe-clip at the front and two symmetrical caulkins (downward facing projections) at the rear. Because of universal corrosion no nails or nail holes are visible. The horseshoe has a broadly irregular plan, suggesting that it was handmade. The large size suggests it was worn by a large draught horse. Toe-clips were routinely added to horseshoes after 1850 to add stability to the hoof in the shoe, while caulkins have been a feature of hor…

Late Medieval wrought iron horseshoe. The shoe is 106mm wide by 119mm long. There are three nail holes visible on each branch of the shoe, with two blocked by square-headed iron rivet and one empty rectangular perforation where the nail is missing on both branches. The narrowed heels lack calkins but thicken slightly. The width of the web is 25mm. The metal is spalled and corroded. Cf. Clark, J. The Medieval Horse and its Equipment, p.120-123, Type 4. A complete forged/wrought iron wavy rimmed horseshoe of Clark type 2B dating to the Medieval period (c. 1150-1300). The shoe is crescent shaped and broadly rectangular in cross-section. The wavy outside edges consist of three rounded lobes while the inner edge is arched and slightly correspondingly lobed. Each lobe has a punched sub-oval/square-shaped nail hole in the centre, all of which are infilled with deposition residue. The heels are slightly inclined together. The calkins projecting from the upper surface at the end of each heel are broadly rectangular in plan and cross section…

Forged wrought iron late Medieval horseshoe. The shoe is 113mm wide by 127mm long with a length to width ratio of 1.12. There are three un-recessed and un-fullered rectangular nail holes visible on each branch of the shoe, only one of which penetrates through the full thickness. Pronounced calkins (7-8mm perpendicular deflection) formed by the bending of the iron plate survive on the heel of each branch. For the size of the shoe the web is quite broad (34.5mm). There has been much spalling of metal from the surface of the shoe due to corrosion and the lamellar structure of the iron, t…

An incomplete hammered iron horseshoe, possibly a Guildhall shoe, dating to the Medieval period (c. AD 1250-1550). This remaining part consists of the outer right branch with a missing calkin. On the branch there is the fullering with 3 sub-square nail holes. The horseshoe is D-shaped in plan and in cross section. The front is convex and the reverse is flat. It is in very poor condition and is covered by a brownish-orange patina with traces of corrosion towards the edges. It measures 26.5mm in width at the maximum point on the outer branch and 7mm at the inner branch, 12mm at the calk…

Medieval iron horseshoe fragment, 91mm long and 20mm wide with a weight of 54g. The fragment represents just under half a shoe, has a rectangular cross section and a curved tapering form. It has one inner flat edge and the outer edge is 'lobate' with rounded projections. These allow for oval shaped recesses with rectangular holes to accommodate the nails. There are three such holes in the fragment, two of which still contain the rectangular cross sectioned nails. The fragment terminates with a narrow rectangular cross sectioned end which is folded over itself. The fragment f…

An incomplete iron horse shoe of later Medieval or Post Medieval date (1250-1550). The elongated shape of the shoe indicates it was for a rear hoof. The web of the shoe is unusually wide with an arched top to the narrow inner gap. Looking at the ground surface the shoe has lost most of its left hand branch and is heavily corroded giving it an uneven surface. On the left hand side there are three nail holes, all with protruding iron nail heads in place, and positioned opposite, on the broken branch, are two broadly rectangular nail holes, now filled by corrosion. So the shoe had a 3:3 …

An iron horseshoe (in two pieces) of probable Medieval to Post Medieval date, about AD 1250 - 1600. It is of Clark type 4 (Clark, 2004, The Medieval Horse and its Equipment). It has a fairly narrow inner profile and no obvious calkins. The shoe has three nail holes on one side and four on the other with six rectangular headed nails extant or partially extant, each standing proud of the shoe. The horseshoe is sub-rectangular in section, being convex on the ground surface and flat on the foot surface. The web measures 31.6mm at its widest point and narrows down to 22mm at one heel, and …

The length is 115mm, the width is 117mm and the weight 126.32g. The style and size suggest a draught shoe and probably a dove shoe of circa 14th to late 15th century. Reference Ivan. G. Sparkes, Old Horseshoes, Page 15. This 'later medieval' form can be found illustrated in Clark (1986, 3; fig. 8). Clark, J., 1995. The Medieval Horse and its Equipment c.1150 - c.1450. An incomplete iron bevelled key hole type horseshoe of post-medieval date, (1550-1880). The object is a typical U-shape in plan with a keyhole profile in the centre and is almost complete. The calkins are rounded and worn. The number and location of the nail holes cannot be determined due to corrosion. This horse shoe is very similar to one on page 41 of Bailey, G. 1997. Detector finds 3. Greenlight (Witham, Essex). The length is 155mm and the width is 128mm.

A complete forged, wrought iron horseshoe of later medieval or post-medieval date. The horseshoe has heavy calkins (not rolled) measuring 17.4mm thick, and the nail holes are rectangular some of which are countersunk. Two nails remain in place and these have square heads, not the fiddle key heads characteristic of earlier medieval horseshoes. There is no fullering line around the nail holes. A very similar horseshoe is illustrated in Ward-Perkins (1954:117 fig. 37.5), which is from the Guildhall Museum and is date from the 15th or early 16th century AD.
