Two small pottery sherds weighing a collective total of 7.27g were examined under a binocular microscope (x12) and analysed in accordance with the guidelines of the Prehistoric Ceramics Research Group (PCRG 1997). Due to a lack of diagnostic features, a comparison with other ceramic assemblages is problematic and can only be made through the analysis of their fabric types. A simple rounded rim form too small to be diagnostic was recovered with a very abraded bodysherd weighing only 1g. The rim sherd comes from a large round or barrel-shaped storage jar, which curved inwards at the rim (Greyhound Yard type 6). Eight sherds of hand-made south-east Dorset black burnished 1 pottery of Roman date. The sample comprises two base sherds, four rim sherds, one body sherd and part of a handle. Two of the rim fragments are from everted rimmed jars and two are from plain shallow bowls ('dog dishes'). The handle is probably from a flagon or jug and the base sherds are undiagnostic. A single sherd of Roman coarse grey ware, possibly from the Savernake region of North Wiltshire and datable to 43-150 AD. The fabric is very coarse and is light grey on the exerior and buff/white on the interior in a sandwich effect. Inclusions comprise abundant rounded light grey grog (<1mm), frequent large brown/black iron ore (<6mm) and frequent sub-angular chalk/limestone (<1.5mm). It is handmade, with a lumpy interior finish. The sherd measures 35.36mm x 29.32mm x 8.17mm thick (9.58g).

Fifteen sherds from coarseware cooking pots of eleventh to twelfth century date. Five are rim sherds, five are body sherds and five are carinated base sherds (two of which conjoin). The sherds are a reduced dark grey or a slightly more oxidised dark reddish-brown. The fabric contains moderate angular chert and sub-rounded grog inclusions (up to 3mm). Most of the sherds have external sooting. The curvature of the rim sherds indicates rim diameters of about 30cm, 52cm, 58cm and 60cm (x2). Combined weight: 651g

A sherd from a tripod pitcher of late twelfth to thirteenth century date. The sherd comprises one of the vessel's three squat rounded feet and part of the body. There is a carination just above the foot. The sherd is a reduced dark grey throughout with the exception of the internal surface, which has re-oxidised a pinkish-buff colour. The fabric contains abundant small (<1mm) angular and sub-angular limestone and other inclusions. The sherd is externally glazed with a reduced green lead glaze. A body sherd from a hand-made vessel of probable 13th to 14th century AD date. The sherd has a grey reduced core and oxidised orange surfaces. The fairly coarse fabric contains moderate fine quartz sand, occasional iron oxide (up to 3mm), occasional angular quartz pieces (up to 3mm) and limestone (up to 3mm). There are traces of a degraded external lead glaze. The vessel was probably produced at one of the south Somerset production centres. The fabric is similar to Donyatt fabrics DPT 1/DPT 2.

A handle sherd of probable seventeenth century date. The sherd has a quatrefoil-shaped cross-section and probably formed part of the handle of a bucket pot. The fabric contains abundant very fine (>0.1mm) quartz sand, moderate small (>2.5mm) rounded iron oxide and moderate very fine mica particles. The mica appears to be more common on the surfaces. The sherd has light orange oxidised surfaces and a reduced grey core. There are traces of a yellow lead glaze in several places. A barley twist handle fragment from a late medieval or early post medieval vessel. The broadly cylindrical fragment measures 66mm in length by 28.7mm in diameter and weighs 46.21g. It has an oxidised orange surface and a reduced grey core. The fabric contains abundant fine rounded quartz sand and occasional darker orange iron oxide. There are patches of a light brownish-green lead glaze in the recesses. This is probably a product of one of the South Somerset production centres.

28 sherds of South East Dorset Black Burnished Ware, generally small and abraded, recovered in association with a large quantity of other Roman coarseware sherds from a small 1.5m square patch of garden. 18 are plain undecorated body sherds, mosty with burnished surfaces and generally black or dark grey in colour. A small abraded body sherd of Medieval coarseware pottery dating from the 11th-13th centuries AD. The fabric is reduced light grey in colour with buff-orange/brown surfaces, which have been almost completely removed through abrasion. Inclusions consist mainly of abundant poorly sorted rounded and sub-round quartz (<1.5mm) and occasional angular flint/chert (<3mm). It was probably made in the South Somerset region. Four abraded body sherds of late Iron Age shell tempered pottery datable from 300BC to 43AD. They are generally buff pink to orange in colour throughout, although one sherd is reduced grey with an orange-pink external surface. One sherd is up to 18.5mm thick, the others range from 8-5mm in thickness. They are generally small sherds ranging from 18 x 22.5mm to 33.65 x 34.77mm in size. The total assemblage weighs 36.96g.

The remainder of the sherds are body sherds, one of which has a single incised or burnished line decoration and another has a tapered neck. All handmade, although one has less temper and is fired to a higher temperature and may be wheel made. The colour of the sherds is patchy ranging from oxidised orange-pink to buff-brown. Total weight of the assemblage is 150.33g. sherds size varies from 50.34 x 48.08mm to 25.03 x 19.79mm and thickess varies from 12.56mm to 6.54mm.
