Four fragments of wood shaped into objects. The objects are not clear but they are possibly part of furniture rather than tools. They are likely to be Post Medieval in date in line with other material found nearby. No weights area given as this depends on how dry they are. Piece 1: Snapped in two (all the wood is waterlogged and very delicate). Slightly curved (possibly bent once waterlogged) strip of wood with straight, parallel sides, a squared off end and an irregular break at the other end. One side is slightly thicker than the other but this could be from differential …

An intaglio set within an oval-shaped copper alloy outer casing. It is probably Roman in date, but could also be Post medieval. The intaglio is possibly of red jasper and is engraved with a male bust facing left (described from the matrix). There has been some deterioration of the material and it is not possible to accurately determine who is represented. The material is opaque and dark red, with crazed cracks and is slightly shiny. The copper alloy casing has a bevelled rim which lies level with the intaglio, and the lower surface is slightly hollowed. There are traces of probable so…

A plaque of a bird made out of pipeclay. Geoff Egan writes: "one of a very varied series of figurines (mostly of humans and some of animals) and models of objects (fire bellows, even an early steam-train engine). The last is an indicator of how long they went on, with the series in this country starting off with saints in the late C15th"..."It is very rough indeed, though it could have been painted (possibly it would only satisfy a child). Certainly folk art - was it something like a fairing?...I suspect late C17th/C18th is most probable (as a date)". Fairings first made an appear…

Conical lead weight. Sub-circular in plan. Tapers upwards to a blunt point. A hole is pierced through the sides, at approximately 8mm from the top point, through which a (probably iron) suspension loop would have fitted. Accurate dating of lead weights is difficult, as similar types were in used from the Roman period through to the medieval period. This particular weight is more typical of medieval steelyard weights, than of Roman examples.

Complete cast copper-alloy chape dating from the late Medieval to early Post-Medieval period (c.1400-1600). The object has been formed from a single sheet of copper alloy which has been folded into a conical shape tapering to one end. There is an overlap forming the join on the reverse. The narrow terminal end is open and a cross bar is visible on the inside adding stability to the opening. There are two punched rivet holes opposite one another towards the tapered end of the chape. Due to its size this chape probably once housed a dagger rather than a sword. The patina although corrode…
