Object type: LITHIC IMPLEMENT
Broad period: MESOLITHIC
County: Central Bedfordshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
A re-touched flint flake tool of probable late Mesolithic to early Neolithic date.
The tool, which has been made from a broad flake, is sub-triangular in form. The upper surface has two broad flake removal scars, whilst the underside shows rippling from the initial strike. Re-touching has occurred around two of the three edges, with the removal of a single row of mostly very small chippings; the remaining side retains its original cortex. The flint is a lightly patinated mottled greyish brown.
The implement measures 29.6mm long, 28.9mm wide and 5.5mm thick. The weight is 4.91g.

A flint axe of Neolithic date.
The axe is sub-rectangular in plan, tapering only slightly towards the rounded butt. It is pointed oval in section, the greatest thickness being at the centre point. The top half of one face and the the bottom part of the opposite face show that the flint surface was originally polished smooth. The fact that the remainder of the surfaces are lower than these smooth areas and show numerous flake removal scars suggests that the axe was re-worked at some point in its life. The flint is a heavily patinated mottled creamy-grey colour.
The implement meas…

Edge damaged flint flake from the the prehistoric period.
It is roughly triangular in section and in plan. It is made from a grey flint. The dorsal face has a central ridge which is broken where the flint is notched. The ventral face is smooth although slight cnchoidal ripples can be seen. One long side of the flint has been broken and chipped, probably when it has been in the ground.
This is likely to be a bi-polar flake which would explain the different fracture lines.

Lithic impliment: Mesolithic tranchet adze, dating 9000 to 6000 BC. There have been suggestions that tranchet adze continued in use into the Neolithic, however there is no direct evidence for this. The adze is an elongated oval in plan with a lenticular cross section with pointed edges. In profile the adze is sub-rectangular with elongated pointed blade end. The blade end shows no evidence of wear, however the blade end of adze could be restruck to form a new cutting edge. The rough shape of the adze was created using a hard hammer to remove the outer cortex of a flint nodule (however …

Object type: BLADE
Broad period: MESOLITHIC
County: Telford and Wrekin
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
Relatively large flint blade of probable later Mesolithic date (6500BC - 3500BC). The flint tool is sub-rectangular in plan and broadly sub-triangular in cross section. The bulb of percussion is complete and there is evidence of retouch / reworking to both the long sides of the blade. These are most concentrated in the upper right edge. A small area of cortex is also present on blade; this suggests that the flake was produced during the earlier life of the core as this material had not yet been removed. However, the upper face of the blade has a series of flake scars suggesting that it…

Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
Lower segment of snapped flint blade of probable late Mesolithic date (6500BC - 3500BC). The flint tool is sub-rectangular in plan and broadly sub-triangular in cross section. The bulb of percussion is missing. There is evidence of retouch / reworking to both the long edges of the blade. There is no evidence of cortex on any part of the blade; this suggests that the flake was produced during the later life of the core once this material has been removed. The flint is a light matt grey colour and has been slightly abraded in the ploughsoil. The source of flint is difficult to ascertain;…

Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
Lower segment of snapped flint blade of probable late Mesolithic date (6500BC - 3500BC). It is possible that this flake has been adapted to form a relatively crude shaped awl or borer. The flint tool is sub-rectangular in plan with the lower edge of the flint being closely shaped into a point. The flake is broadly sub-triangular in cross section. The bulb of percussion is missing. There is also no evidence of cortex on any part of the blade; this suggests that the flake was produced during the later life of the core once this material has been removed. There is evidence of detailed ret…
