A fragment of one section of a cylindrical rotary quernstone/millstone of Roman or later date. It is a small section, trapezoidal in shape, of a much larger flat, disc-shaped quernstone, although it is not clear whether it is the upper or lower stone. The outer grinding surface has been dressed with pecking, while the other face is roughly dressed. The fragment is roughly rectangular in cross-section, but the original shape, circumference and the form of the central hole are all unclear due to its fragmentary condition. It is a mid-grey, fine-grained, volcanic stone with vesicular sur…

A fragment of one section of a cylindrical rotary quernstone/millstone of Roman or later date. It is a small section, sub-triangular in shape, of a much larger flat, disc-shaped quernstone, although it is not clear whether it is the upper or lower stone. The outer grinding surface has been dressed with transverse, parallel raised ridges, each one roughly 20mm apart from one another, while the other face is roughly dressed. The fragment is roughly rectangular in cross-section, but the original shape, circumference and the form of the central hole are all unclear due to its fragmentary …

Fine-grained buff Sandstone with very occasional grey flint inclusions (of lengths 3-8.5mm), now variably reddened by burning on all surfaces, from reuse as building material or flue-lining; two rotary quern fragments, probably from the same stone. An effectively vertical curved outer edge on the larger fragment permits estimation of its original diameter of 340mm. Rough concave hollows, typically of diameter 10-25mm, mark pecking extending to its adjacent upper and lower surfaces. These hint at a lightly plano-convex form for the stone. However, no smoothed grinding surfaces appear o…

Object type: QUERN
Broad period: IRON AGE
County: Warwickshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
Iron Age to Roman (possibly -200 to AD 400) quern fragment: The stone is sandstone with fine to medium sized inclusions which are rounded, brown, white and pink coloured. The base is sub-triangular with two-thirds of the edges being broken, the remaining third appears to be a the original edge which has a steep, slightly angled side. The centre corner of the quernstone is concave vertically which was originally the central funnel of the quern. The base is worn, slightly concave and smooth. In section the quern is a quarter-circle.
It measures 128.37mm long, 112.24mm wide across the …

Iron Age to Roman (possibly -200 to AD 400) probable quern fragment: The stone is sandstone with fine to medium sized inclusions which are rounded, brown, white and pink coloured. The base is an irregular shape with broken and abraded edges, although one edge has the original edge which tapers to a curved edge. The base is worn flat and smooth. In section the quern is a sub D-shaped with the upper edge being slightly domed. The remaining surface of the possible quern is rough.
It measures 120.36mm long, 118.73mm wide across the smooth side face and 47.27mm thick. It weighs 782g.

Nearly complete upper half of a Roman beehive quern, probably dating from the 2nd century AD. The stone is very heavy and dome-shaped with a very worn, but probably formerly fluted upper surface. The bottom is flat. Only a small part is missing, but the central perforation as well as the side hole for the wooden handle are still present. Unmalted grain would have been poured into the vertical perforation at the top whilst there would have been a wooden handle in the horizontal hole for turning the quern stone on top of the lower stone. The rotary quern used circular motions to grind t…

A flint saddle quern of probable Neolithic date.
The artefact is roughly pointed-oval in plan and has been formed from a split flint nodule. The upper face of the quern is slightly concave, with a textured surface probably achieved through repeated striking with a pointed implement. This working extends across all of the exposed area, although in certain areas - particularly the central portion and at the narrower, more pointed end, but also in a thin band around most of the perimeter - the grinding process has created a smooth, polished surface. The underside of the quern retains m…

Worked granite rotary quern stone. Only the top half remains. The central perforation is still in good condition although does show signs of wear. The underside of this half has a chipped edge and there is a ridge to indicate the location of the quern handle.
