Object type: KNIFE
Broad period: NEOLITHIC
County: Lincolnshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
Pale rose tinted flint with cloudy cortex opatches possible knife. Oval flake with angled invasive working across its dorsal side and faint ripples on the ventral. A curved edge bears tiny serrations produced by very short abrupt retouch executed from the dorsal aspect. Patina on the flat edge opposite may suggest the serrated edge was the working part of the tool, with the flat part opposite enabling pressure to be exerted on it. Suggested date: Early Neolithic, 4000-3500 BC. Length: 19.9mm, Width: 15.1mm, Thickness: 2.0mm, Weight: 0.82gms.

Object type: PICK
Broad period: NEOLITHIC
County: Isle of Wight
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
An incomplete flint pick of probable Early Neolithic date (3500 BC-2900 BC). The pick is sub-rectangular in plan and sub-trapezoidal in cross-section. It has probably been made from an elongated flint pebble. This implement is humped-backed. The dorsal face is mainly covered with cortex and has been knapped to form a cutting edge at the distal end. One side of the dorsal face has been crudely knapped along its entire length. The opposite side is in the form a large natural break and the ventral face is featureless except for a small negative bulb of percussion. At the butt end there…

Object type: FLAKE
Broad period: NEOLITHIC
County: Cornwall
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
Triangular shaped flint flake with the long edge on a flat area having been trimmed. This long edge is opposite a little cortex which acts as backing when using the edge trimmed flake. Probably the shape of the flake is natural but it has been utilised as a cutting tool after trimming one edge. The flint is a medium grey colour with large speckles of light grey and was likely derived from a local beach pebble. Mercer [1981] illustrates a similar example on page 127, fig 55, No. L94 which is dated to the Neolithic.

Object type: FLAKE
Broad period: NEOLITHIC

A very small flake with a snapped edge so could have been a larger flake or even a blade at one time. This snap is seen on the long edge. There is trim around each edge leading to this snapped edge - the trimmed edges are the short edges either side of the break. It is an edge trimmed flake. The flint is a light grey colour and was likely derived from a local beach pebble. Mercer [1981] illustrates a similar example on page 131, fig. 57, No. L109 which is dated to the Neolithic.

Object type: FLAKE
Broad period: NEOLITHIC
County: Cornwall

Flake or chip with trimmed edge, or slight very shallow retouch on ventral side. It may be that it was being worked up to a point. There is gloss from usewear on the ventral side. Cortex remains on the edge opposite the trimmed/retouched edge and was probably used as a backing when using the the flake. The flint is dark grey in colour and was likely derived from a local beach pebble. Mercer [1981] illustrates a similar example on page 133, Fig 58, No.L124 which is dated to the Neolithic.
