Object type: HANDAXE
Broad period: PALAEOLITHIC
County: Buckinghamshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
A small and complete oval flint core tool; possibly a handaxe (Wymer Type K) of lower to middle Paleolithic date (c500,000 to 40,000 BC) or a later Mesolithic adze. The tool is 76.7mm in length, 45.7mm in width and has been knapped from a nodule of blue grey flint. Patches of brown cortex remain at the butt end. The tool has been bifacially worked, but is asymmetrical, with a convex and a flat side providing a wedge shaped profile. This may suggest a Mesolithic date, however there are no tranchet removals which would be characteristic of core tools of this period.

Object type: BLADE
Broad period: MESOLITHIC
County: Buckinghamshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
A flint blade with plano convex profile, 39.2mm in length, struck from brown flint with a white patina from prolonged deposition in calcareous sediments. There is a clear striking platform and bulb of percussion from hard-hammered striking. The dorsal surface has parallel scars from earlier flaking from the core as well as as a hinge fracture scar at the top from a failed blade removal. The distal end has relatively recent damage and a small patch of cortex. There is no evidence for retouch. Circa late Mesolithic to early Neolithic.
