Object type: BLADE
Broad period: PALAEOLITHIC
County: North Yorkshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
A pointed retouched flint blade, possibly of late Upper Paleolithic date, 84.5mm in length, lanceolate in form and struck from a brown coloured flint. It has a trapezoidal cross section and a slightly curved side profile. There is low angle sub-parallel retouch along the entirety of one long side and along two thirds of the other, on the dorsal surface only, running to the distal tip, which has a triangular cross section and has been retouched around and across its entirety with semi abrupt and low angle retouch, to refine a working point. The distal end of the ventral s…

Broad period: PALAEOLITHIC
County: Hampshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
An incomplete and rolled flint handaxe of lower Paleolithic date (500,000-180,000 BC). The tool is bifacially worked and missing its tip but was likely of Ficron type (Wymer (1999) Type M). The tool is triangular in shape, with a tapering profile and plano convex cross section. One side retains around 40% cortex and the surface is patinated / recorticated to an orange brown from prolonged deposition in iron-rich gravels.

A small, heavily rolled and water-worn flint handaxe of lower Paleolithic date (500,000-180,000 BC). The tool is 61.6mm in length and most likely of Wymer (1999) Type K. The tool is bifacially worked from a brown flint using soft hammer flaking with a lenticular cross section and a dark brown to orange patination typical of a period of prolonged deposition in iron-rich gravel deposits. Barnacles and evidence of prolonged marine exposure are also evident.

Object type: BACKED BLADE
Broad period: PALAEOLITHIC
County: Dorset
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
A large and heavily recorticated flint blade which has been retouched along one side using long, low angle and semi abrupt scaled and stepped retouch. The other long edge retains cortex along its length; the distal end narrows to a square terminal with a hinge fracture.
This is possibly identifiable as a backed blade of Final Late Upper Palaeolithic date (c. 13,000 BC) although such tools were produced throughout prehistory.

Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
A large worked flint flake, 90.3mm in length, struck from an orange brown flint and of potential Lower/Early Middle Paleolithic (c 500,000-180,000 BC) date. There is a prominent bulb of percussion and striking platform at the proximal end. The dorsal surface has removal scars; the ventral surface is unworked. The flake is heavily rolled and water worn. Any retouch is now unclear due to battering damage around the edges.

An incomplete flint handaxe of lower Paleolithic date (500,000-180,000 BC). The tool is 121.6mm in length and of sub cordate form (Wymer (1999) Type G). It has a thick (44.2mm) oval cross section and is struck from a pale brown flint, with light brown to buff-coloured patination typical of deposition in glacial outwash sand and gravel terrace deposits in southern England. The tool is bifacially worked with soft hammer flaking. The tip has broken away and the object has some crazing and shatter damage, likely from frost action. These areas of…

A cordate lower to middle Palaeolithic flint handaxe, 87.9mm in length and dating to c. 500,000 - 180,000 BC. The tool is made from a pale grey brown flint which is now heavily patinated with a white patina from prolonged deposition in calcareous sediments. There are also patches of iron staining to the surface. The side profile and cross section are lenticular and the tool is bifacially worked, with removals covering both faces. The distal tip appears to have been damaged, possibly during use.

A large flint blade, 84.5mm in length struck from a light brown flint with a thin triangular section. The flint has a heavily worn and polished patina with dark brown staining from prolonged exposure to a riverine environment and flowing water. The long edges are roughly parallel and have battering damage along their full length, from usage, post depositional fluvial erosion or both. The reverse has a low bulbar scar. Possibly a blade or "bruised" blade tool of later Upper Paleolithic date.

A small and complete oval flint core tool; possibly a handaxe (Wymer Type K) of lower to middle Paleolithic date (c500,000 to 40,000 BC) or a later Mesolithic adze. The tool is 76.7mm in length, 45.7mm in width and has been knapped from a nodule of blue grey flint. Patches of brown cortex remain at the butt end. The tool has been bifacially worked, but is asymmetrical, with a convex and a flat side providing a wedge shaped profile. This may suggest a Mesolithic date, however there are no tranchet removals which would be characteristic of core tools of this period.

The handaxe is struck from a pale orange-brown flint with cream coloured patination from post depositional exposure to chalky soils. The object is worked with soft-hammered removals across both faces; the cross section is roughly lenticular, but with an asymmetrical lump to one side.
