A single blade-like flake of flint debitage of uncertain date, probably Neolithic to Bronze Age. A secondary flake of mid-brown to grey flint, with c. 33% of the dorsal face retaining cortex at the distal end. It is sub-triangular in cross-section and broadly sub-rectangular in plan, with roughly parallel sides but which converge at the proximal and distal ends. It has a small bulb of percussion surviving a the distal end, lacking a scar, from which radiate relatively shallow conchoidal ripples. The striking platform has survived at the proximal end, with some potential evidence for p…

Object type: RETOUCHED FLAKE
Broad period: BRONZE AGE
County: Somerset
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A single flake of knapped flint of uncertain date. A secondary flake of mottled grey flint, with two small areas of surviving sandy, beige cortex at the proximal and distal ends, covering c. 15-20%. The striking platform is no longer present, although there is the suggestion of a large bulb of percussion. Sub-parallel removal scars are present on the dorsal face, struck from the same direction as the overall removal. In addition, struck from around 45 degrees to the others and cutting through the cortex, are three, small, parallel low angle removal scars, with this edge shows signs of…

Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
Three flakes of Chert debitage, of probable Later Neolithic or Bronze Age date. All three flakes are of a gritty, brown chert, with two being secondary, and the third tertiary. This latter flake has a single much more heavily patinated removal scar, suggesting the reuse of earlier material. All of the flakes exhibit relatively irregular flake-like removals, on one flake (tertiary) clearly struck from multiple directions. Although the nature of the chert ensures that the bulbs of percussion are relatively diffuse, where they survive there is no small 'lip' below the striking platform t…

Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
Two flint flakes exhibiting limited retouch and probably dating to the later Neolithic or Bronze Age. Both flakes are incomplete, and tertiary. The first is of a mottled grey-brown flint, missing its distal end. A striking platform survives at the proximal end, with a diffuse bulb of percussion of the ventral face. A number of removal scars survive on the dorsal face, with removals from platforms both parallel and perpendicular to the overall flake removal. The right mesal edge has been blunted with abrupt, short, stepped retouch, with neater, abrupt, short, scalar, retouch to the lef…

A crude flint end scraper, of probable Later Neolithic or Bronze Age date. A secondary flake of mottled grey-brown flint, with a thin layer of sandy, beige cortex surviving at the proximal end of the dorsal face, covering c. 20%. A striking platform and relatively pronounced bulb of percussion survive at the proximal end, with a bulbar scar. A single flake-like removal scar is evident on the dorsal face. The left mesal edge has been blunted by a series of crude scalar removals struck perpendicularly to the flake from the dorsal face. The distal end, curving around onto the right edge,…

A collection of three chert cores of probable Mesolithic date (c. 10,000-4000 BC). 1) The first piece retainins a thin layer of nodular cortex covering about 20 per cent of the surface. The area of cortex is irregular in shape but the rest of the core is conical. Flake and bladelet removal scars cover approximately 80 per cent of the non-cortex walls. They appear to have been removed in the same direction, from the slightly concave striking platform at the top, which shows obvious signs of dressing. The chert is dark red in colour. It measures 60.0mm long, 39.2mm wide, and 24.8…

Fragment of a bladelet, probably Mesolithic (10,000 - 4000 BC). Dark grey, mostly opaque flint. Tertiary blade. Bulb of percussion missing. Almost flat, smooth ventral face with faint conchoidal ripples. Dorsal face shows scars of parallel flake removal. At the proximal end a later flake removal has left a negative hinge fracture. A further removal scar at the distal end has a hackly texture which may suggest heat damage. Retouched (short, scaled, semi-abrupt) all along the right-hand edge of the dorsal face (proximal end at top) and less extensively on the left-hand edge. Length: …

Retouched flint flake of probably Mesolithic date. Dark grey opaque secondary flake, broadly bi-facial but irregular in shape. Cortex remains on the thickest edge, covering about 20-30 per cent of the surface area. The retouch is scaled, low-angled and (mostly?) covers both faces of the flake. The extent of the retouch obscures the identification of the ventral and dorsal faces and the bulb of percussion. The flake is also retouched all the way around the edge which is not cortex. However, the irregular shape of this edge suggests that this object was not a finished tool and that t…

Fragment of a lithic implement. Probably Mesolithic (10,000 - 4000 BC). Black and dark grey opaque flint. Tertiary flake. U-shaped in plan. Sub-triangular in cross-section. Invasive, scaled and low-angled retouch on the left half of one face and a little more on the right edge (when viewed with the pointed end at the bottom). This face is concave and may be the ventral face. Long, scaled and semi-abrupt retouch on the underside of the pointed end. All other faces appear to be accidental or post-depositional breaks. A collection of three flint cores of probable Mesolithic date (c. 10,000-4000 BC) produced during the process of bladelet manufacture. The first core (left in the photographs) is irregular in shape, but appears to have been conical prior to accidental fracture. Thick, nodular cortex remains on about 15 to 20 per cent of the surface. Part of a flat striking platform survives, from which some of the bladelets have been removed . Other bladelets have been removed from another platform, to the right, at a 45-degree angle to the first one. The surface of this second platform is concave…

Eight of the pieces (including the blade) exhibit parallel flake or blade removal scars on their dorsal…

A collection of seven tertiary waste flakes and blades of probable Mesolithic to Early Neolithc date (c. 10,000 - 3500 BC). Most pieces are dark-grey, some with mid-grey (patches?) and mottles. Most are irregularly shaped in plan and thin in profile. Two are sub-triangular in plan, and one of these is the most blade-like, having two ridges running parallel to its long edges on the dorsal face (top row, second from the left in the photographs). A flint end scraper or possibly a thumb-nail scraper of probable Late Neoltihic or Early Bronze Age date. The implement has been made from a secondary flake; cortex remains on one face, covering about 15 per cent of the object's overall surface area. The piece is roughly square in plan. It has a clear striking platform, which is flat, while the opposite (distal) end is rounded. The left and right edges are roughly parallel. On the ventral face the bulb of percussion, fissures and a bulbar scar are clear to see. However, the conchoidal ripples are flat and very faint. The retouch…

Two chert blades both with clear bulbs of percussion on the ventral face and scars from previous parallel removals from the same platform on the dorsal face. Both have very chipped edges obscuring any retouch. One is a orange chert, heavily repatinated, the other a mid brown. They weigh 12.48g in total. The blade like shape and repeat parallel removals may suggest a Mesolithic- Neolithic date.
