Object type: LEAF ARROWHEAD
Broad period: NEOLITHIC
County: Somerset
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
An incomplete Neolithic leaf-shaped flint arrowhead, c. 4000 - 2200 BC.
The arrowhead is formed of a grey-brown tertiary flake, bifacially worked with covering, scaled, low-angle retouch on the dorsal face and invasive, scaled, low-angle retouch on the ventral face. There is a small notch on each side edge of the arrowhead, possibly the result of the knapping process or hafting.
Length: 24.42mm, width: 14.89mm, thickness: 3.44mm, weight: 1.33g.

Object type: LEAF ARROWHEAD
Broad period: NEOLITHIC
County: Somerset
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
An incomplete leaf-shaped arrowhead of Neolithic date (4000-2350 BC). The base is rounded while the upper part tapers to a point that has been broken. The ventral surface is smooth with widely spaced conchoidal ripple marks. Both of the long sides have some areas of short, parallel low angle retouch along their length, while the base shows signs of stepped retouch probably to aid hafting onto a wooden shaft. The dorsal face has evidence of invasive scaled retouch, and short low angle parallel retouch around all the long mesal edges. The flint is a mid brownish grey in colour and semi-…

Object type: LEAF ARROWHEAD
Broad period: NEOLITHIC
County: Somerset
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
An incomplete Late Neolithic to Early Bronze Age transverse arrowhead.
The artefact is a thin triangular tertiary flake made from medium grey flint with a region of lighter grey and occasional pebble cortex like inclusions. The flint has a medium gloss patina.
The arrowhead is sub-triangular in form with one long edge being slightly more curved that its opposite number. The base of the arrowhead has been fractured leaving a clean linear break at the base of the arrow.
The arrowhead has low angled scaled retouch on both the ventral and dorsal surface. On the dorsal surface thi…

A complete leaf shaped arrow head of Neolithic date (4000-2350 BC). The ventral surface is smooth with a low diffuse bulb of percussion and widely spaced conchoidal ripple marks. Both of the long sides have short, semi-parallel low angle retouch running along their entire length, lightly more invasive on one edge than the other, while the base shows signs longer, more invasive semi-parallel shallow retouch, possibly to thin the bulb of percussion and striking platform for hafting. The dorsal face has invasive semi-parallel scaled retouch down one edge, and short, shallow, semi-parall…

A probably incomplete leaf shaped arrow head of Neolithic date (4000-2350 BC). The flake is bifacially worked with slightly convex faces. It is transversally broken at the top (distal end) with an old patnated break. It is also broken at the bottom, slightly on one side, with a large inwards break on the other, these breaks are only partially patinated, sugesting they are more recent damage. The flake has an invasive parallel shallow retouch on both sides along both edges apart from the right edge near the proximal end on the ventral face. The flint has a white/pale grey patina. It me…

A Neolithic flint large leaf shaped arrowhead or spearhead, probably dating to c. AD 4000-2400. Worked from a tertiary flake of translucent grey/brown flint. The arrowhead is triangular in plan and largley flat in corss section, with the proximal end of the flake situated in the lower right corner of the arrowhead. Two large flake-like removals survive on the dorsal face, both with very pronounced ripple marks. Short, semi-abrubt, scalar retouch extends from the base to the point on both mesal edges of the dorsal face. The ventral face is largely unworked, with some possible short, lo…

Knapped flint leaf shaped arrowhead, dating from the Early Neolithic to Early Bronze Age (4000-1000 BC). Both faces are completely covered by covering, scaled, low angled retouch done by pressure flaking. The arrowhead is broadly leaf shaped (lancolate) with a wider, round base. The widest point is about a third of the way up from the base. The point is slightly angled, possibly due to damage. The arrowhead is a tertiary piece with no cortex left. The flint is a translucent pale grey. the arrowhead is 26.3mm long, 15.6mm wide and 4.4mm thick; it weighs 1.72 grams.

About 90% of a leaf shaped arrowhead, missing the point to a break, dating to the Early Neolithic period. Both faces are covered by invasive, shallow, parallel retouch done by pressure flaking. There is a small unretouched area in the centre of one side. The arrowhead is broadly pointed oval with a wider base which comes to a point in the centre. The widest point is about a third of the way up from the base. The upper part of one side is slightly concave while the other is convex, the retouch suggests this is original. The arrowhead is a tertiary piece with no cortex left. As well as …

Fragment of a large flint leaf-shaped arrowhead, dating to the early Neolithic. It was pointed oval in shape but the point end has broken away with a straight break across the head slightly above the widest point and the edges are damaged in places, c.60% of the arrowhead survives. The arrowhead has shallow invasive parallel retouch on both faces with some shorter, shallow retouch near the edges. Complete leaf shaped arrowhead dating to the Early Neolithic period. Formed on the middle of a large thin blade or flake, the bulb of percussion was at the point and has been removed by retouch. It is retouched on both faces with most of the point end of the ventral face un-retouched. On the ventral face the retouch is invasive, parallel and shallow. On the dorsal face it is long, parallel and shallow around the base becoming shorter and sub-parallel around the point. It is semi-abrupt around the point itself. Possible failed leaf arrowhead of mid to dark grey flint with small pale mottles. The ventral face invasion retouch on both edges and a flake removal scar to the distal end. There is invasive parallel retouch on the dorsal face across the proximal end and the right edge. The bulb of percussion has been removed and the waves of percussion are faint. The distal end tapers in width, ending in a crescentic notch.
The distal end is thicker than expected for an arrowhead and it is possible that faults in the flint meant that when attempting to thin the piece, the tip broke leaving the cr…

About 80% of a leaf shaped arrowhead, missing the point to an old break, dating to the Early Neolithic period. Both faces are covered by invasive, shallow, parallel retouch done by pressure flaking. There are patches of cortex on both sides near the butt and a further patch in the upper corner on one side, in all about 15% of the surface. The break at the point is a hinge fracture suggesting an accidental break. The flint is mid grey flint with paler areas and mottling. Incomplete flint leaf-shaped arrowhead, dating to the early Neolithic. The object is very finely worked on both faces, with numerous small removals. It is roughly leaf-shaped but asymetrical, as one side of the butt end curves inwards slightly. Both ends taper gently to a point, but the points are missing. Leaf-shaped flint arrowhead, typical of the earlier Neolithic. The arrowhead is formed on a tertiary flake and is highly worked. There is low-angle, scaled, covering retouch on both faces, removing any traces of a bulb and striking platform. There is a small notch missing towards one end, presumably the result of plough damage. The flint is grey in colour with several lighter patches.
