A retouched flake of Mesolithic date, 7000 - 4000 BC. The flake is translucent and very pale grey in colour, and is sub-rectangular in shape. Narrow, short flakes have been struck from the dorsal side, The concave ventral face is smooth with a prominent bulb of percussion, and ripples of percussion, that emanate from it. There is semi-abrupt, sub-parallel retouch to the left mesal to form a scraper. Suggested date: Late Mesolithic, 7000 - 4000 BC. Length: 32.2mm, Width: 16.1mm, Thickness: 2.6mm. Weight: 1.7g.

Broad period: NEOLITHIC
County: East Riding of Yorkshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A scraper of probable Neolithic date, 4000 - 2350 BC. The scraper is formed from a secondary flake, sub-ovate in plan and roughly concave in section. The flake is mottled grey in colour. There is a large amount of cortex remaining on the dorsal face with a few small flakes removed. There is extensive semi-abrupt, sub-parallel, invasive retouch to the right mesal. On the ventral face there is a low bulb of percussion made from a soft hammer blow. At the distil end the flake is pierced by a small hole, approximately 4mm by 3mm. This piercing is probably natural resulting from a small fo…

A flint scraper of probable Bronze Age date, circa 2700-1600 BC. The flint is a secondary flint with a very small amount of cortex remaining at the distil end. The flake is sub-ovate in plan and plano-concave in section. There is scale flaking and semi-abrupt, sub-parallel retouch to the left mesal. The flake is pale grey in colour with pale inclusions. A flake has been removed from the ventral face, which makes the flint easy to handle by the thumb. There is a large striking platform at the proximal end. Length: 22.3mm, Width: 28.4mm, Thickness:10.2mm. Weight: 6.8g.

A worked flint axehead of Neolithic date (c. 3500 - c. 2100 BC). The implement has been extensively knapped into a sub-oval cross section, with a tapering plan. It consists of a large terminal with a cutting face. The opposing terminal is broadly round with some cortex remaining on a prominent nodule, possibly indicative of an unfinished implement. The tool exhibits an asymmetric cross section, where one side of the central chord is flatter than the other. The edges have retouch in places. The flint is a mixture of greys, ranging from lighter to darker. All faces exhibit some orange i…

A crude blade fashioned from a core. The flint is dark grey, with some blue/grey patination. From a single striking platform two blade scars extend, with a third just to the side; the central scar ends in an abrupt break where the cortex has stopped the removal, possibly the outcome that inspired the removal of the blade; however, the thick scar along one edge makes it very comfortable to hold, with a still-sharp cutting surface opposite. The reverse side shows a clear bulb of percussion and has exposed an area of weakness in the flint at the bottom of the removal. It measures 60mm…
