Bifacially struck flint tool, probably abandoned before completion. Struck on a lingulate-shaped secondary flint with a strip of cortex remaining down the length of the dorsal face. There are multiple lateral strikes on both faces but only the dorsal face has been struck with removals at the distal end. Several of the lateral strikes on the ventral face have terminated prematurely in hinge and step fractures which in all likelihood made the intended tool unrecoverable. Probably intended to be a knife. Most likely Neolithic in date.  Length 95mm, width 29m…

Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A crude flint implement of late Bronze Age to early Iron Age date (c.BC 1050-600). Description: The object is fabricated from a natural, tongue-shaped flint pebble. One face is almost entirely covered with a pale brown, thin cortex, the opposite face being cortex-free with many natural flake removal scars. It is plano-convex in cross-section. It has been worked with short, semi-abrupt, sub-parallel retouch around much of its edge. Measurements: Length 67.37mm: Width 28.96mm: Thickness 9.09mm: Weight 28.26g Discussion: The angle of retouch is typical of flint scrapers but the …

A flint implement, possibly a Mesolithic scraper. It consists of a sub triangular lump of opaque grey flint with a pale orange brown patina. It may be a natural flake. On the ventral side a central flake has been removed which shows a point of percussion and the suggestion of two faint concentric ripples.Whichever way up the implement is held, between thumb and forefinger, the thumb naturally fits the depression thus formed. The two long edges both show evidence of retouching. In each case the area of retouching is on the part of the edge exposed when the flake is held between thumb a…

A flint blade, probably dating to the early Neolithic period (4000-3501BC) or possibly to the early Mesolithic (10,000-7001BC). Flint - translucent mid grey to orange in colour. The blade is rectangular in plan, with some cortex remaining on the distal end and covering about a third of its dorsal face. The bulb of percussion and striking platform are clearly visible on the proximal end of the flake. The bulb of percussion shows the signs of a bulbar scar. The artefact has been made out of a secondary flake. The blade bears retouch on one edge to create serration. The po…

A lithic implement fabricated on a tertiary flake of dark brown and grey flint. The flake has a large bulb of percussion, most likely from a hard hammer strike, and ripples of percussion across the ventral face. There is a well-prepared, flat striking platform on the proximal end. The edges of the flake and much of the dorsal face have been extensively worked using both invasive, scaled, low-angle retouch and short, scaled, semi-abrupt retouch to create edges that could be used for scraping. At the distal end, the flake has been worked into a point using short, scaled, semi-abrupt ret…

A struck flake of Mesolithic-Bronze Age date (c. 8000-1500 BC). Possibly retouched as a tool with evidence of the notch (may be natural). Hard hammer secondary removal, the surface is covered with approximately 40% cortex, there is some edge damage towards the tip. The right hand edge is 'denticulate' but, as this appears to be composite, it may be of dual purpose. It measures 47.53mm by 23.13mm by 5.64mm and weighs 5.9g. Utilised flakes such as this example are difficult to date without a secure archaeological context and could have been utilised in a great variety of mundan…

A secondary flint lithic implement, possibly a knife, fabricator or a scraper. A very small amount of cortex remains at the distal end of the dorsal face. The flint is opaque, mid-grey and mottled with a low-gloss patina. The tool is lozenge shaped with a triangular cross section. The dorsal face has two equal sized parallel facets which meet in a central ridge running vertically down the tool, there is fine notching running along the right side margin into the distal end, which shows short scaled semi-abrupt retouch, the distal end feels very smooth to the touch possibly due to use. …

A large scraper formed from a broad / wide blade knapped from a pale grey coloured flint . The ventral face shows a bulb of percussion and series of choncoidal ripples. The dorsal face has multiple flake facets / scars. Three of the sides have short abrupt retouching whilst the other has a shallower angled retouch. This suggests it may be a combination tool used for cutting and scraping. The large size of the tool may suggest a late Neolithic or early Bronze age date, this is also reflected in flints of these periods found in the nearby vicinity. The flake measures 51.39mm length, …

A lithic impliment of uncertain function but probably from the Neolithic to Bronze age period. Circa 4000-1600 BC. The flint is sub-conical in shape, triangular in profile and has numerous flake removals from different angles. The distal end has a series of parallel scars (retouch). The proximinal end has no clear evidence of bulb of percussion and flake removal extends into and probably beyond the butt. This seems to have broken at this point in antiquity. The flint is two tone, with a angled grey brown to a light grey separated by a thin white band. Length of flint: 42.01 mm. Width:…

A knapped/worked flint probably dating to the Neolithic period.Circa 4000 BC-2700BC. The flint has a large bulb of percussion eminating from a broad platform. The dorsal face has numerous flake removals around what appears to be a natural flaw. A small amount of white cortex is evident to the sides. There is possibly some re-touch to one edge. The flint is a translucent grey/brown colour. Length of flint: 41.13 mm. Width: 35.61 mm. Thickness: 11.30 mm. Weight 15 grams.

A flint Lithic implement; a multi-function tool combining a borer and a knife, of uncertain date, probably early Mesolithic to late Neolithic date (10000 BC-2200 BC). It is formed on honey coloured flint with cortex on the right proximal dorsal face, and is patinated to naer white. It is an elongated, sub triangular curved shaped in plan with a point at the distal end, and is sub triangular in section. It is a secondary flake with invasive, scaled, low angle retouch on the right hand side of the dorsal face at the distal end. An abrupt removal across the point creates the borer. There…

A flint lithic implement; a utilised flake which is probably a blank for a scraper dating from the Mesolithic or Neolithic period, about 9000 BC - 2200 BC. The flint is patinated and is a mottled cream colour. It is sub-rectangular with a rounded proximal end and snapped distal end. It is sub-triangular in section. It is tertiary with opaque inclusions on the right side. There are blade removals on the left side of the dorsal face and some removals at the proximal end which are probable platform preparation. This flake is probably a blank for forming a scraper, but it has not been ret…

A sub-oval, flint, end scraper. The scraper has been made from a primary flake of dark brown flint. There are clear ripples of percussion across the ventral face but the striking platform and bulb of percussion have been lost due to secondary working at the proximal end. The dorsal face is partially covered in a thick, off-white cortex. The scraper has been abruptly and steeply pressure flaked around 60% of its edge with the distal end worked to produce a rounded scraping edge. There is some further, more refined pressure flaking to the proximal end of the flake These types of scrap…
