Object type: POINT
Broad period: NEOLITHIC
County: Norfolk
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A probably Early Neolithic bifacial point, measuring 102 x 28 x 13mm. This point is probably classifiable as a spear point, though Evans describes a similar example from the Hill of Corennie in Aberdeenshire as a 'fabricator'. It has a lenticular section, is finished by shallow flaking inwards from each lateral edge on both faces. There is a more rounded end, presumably the butt end, and a more pointed end which is slightly curved in profile. The surface is patinated irregularly a creamy colour with some scattered iron stains. It probably dates from 4000-3000 BC.

Object type: HANDAXE
Broad period: PALAEOLITHIC
County: Norfolk
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
Lower Palaeolithic flint hand axe of Wymer's type D (1999), of asymmetrical plan and profile, with fairly straight cutting edges, all flake removals are hard hammer struck. It appears to be worked from a naturally fractured piece of flint rather than a nodule or large flake, the ventral face (the face without annotations) has two addorsed natural flake removals from the offset ridge, likely to be part of the original glacially crushed face of the flint. The dorsal face has a patch of worn cortex extant towards the left lateral edge. The piece is heavily rolled and patinated orange fro…

Object type: AXEHEAD ROUGHOUT
Broad period: NEOLITHIC
County: Norfolk
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A Neolithic Axe/Adze Roughout, measuring 155 x 75 x 29mm. It has been made on a thin oval tabular nodule of brownish grey flint, with areas of weathered cortex on both faces. The roughout has been prepared by bifacial shallow flaking around the whole perimeter. In profile it is curved, with a boss of flint protruding from the convex face, perhaps preventing further flaking and leading to its abandonment. After further shaping, it would probably be finished by grinding and polishing. It dates from 4000-2300 BC.

A Neolithic combination tool. An almost circular tertiary flake in grey, specked flint with a prominent bulb of percussion, plain platform and with a hinged terminal. The left hand side is steeply retouched to give a scraper edge, while the right edge is sharpened by shallow retouch to form a knife. Probably Neolithic 4000 - 2000 BC.

Neolithic scraper (with additional retouch). Dimensions 53 x 23 x 10mm. Made on a blade-like flake of dark brown flint. Both lateral edges and the distal end have rather coarse steep retouch and show signs of wear. The flake has been hard hammer struck and the proximal end has damage indicating that several blows had been necessary to separate it.

Barbed and tanged arrowhead. Sutton type, with pointed barbs and rounded tang, the point is intact. Large area on each face of original flake from which it was formed, both lateral edges flaked bifacially. Thickness 4mm. Probably a hunting loss as this is an arrowhead intended for use. Early Bronze Age.

Polished Axe, dimensions: 169 x 61 x 34mm. Highly ground and polished all over, with only a few faint flake scars visible at the lateral edges and rounded butt: the sides are ground round rather than flat. The curved cutting edge is sharp with only one ancient chip, while a recent small chip reveals pale grey flint. The axe is patinated light brown with some buff areas. Found in the 1960's and subsequently used as a paperweight. Neolithic (4,000 to 2,350BC)

Late Neolithic/Early Bronze Age, barbed and tanged arrowhead. 41 x 18 x 4mm. Long narrow type (Green’s Sutton C) with long tang and prominent barbs (one broken). Point is sharp but probably has been damaged by impact. Flaked all over on one face, but other face retains part of the ventral scar and shows that the point is at the proximal end of the blank. A lingulate-shaped fragment of a flint implement with a sub-triangular cross-section, probably part of an axe or adze. The convex dorsal face has evidence of considerable work in the form of flake removal largely from the sides in towards the centre. The proximal end is broken in a transverse break, but the dorsal face at this point has been smoothed across the full width of the tool. The fine lines of abrasion are of similar size and depth and are aligned parallel with the long axis of the tool. There is a consistency about them that is more suggestive of a polishing process, rather …

Small, possibly soft hammer struck tertiary scraper of unpatinated mid-grey flint with fine semi-invasive to steep retouch to almost all edges, including the platform. Small scrapers like this have been recorded from Mesolithic contexts as well as Early Bronze Age, this may be more likely to be from the the earlier period, if indeed it is soft hammer struck; there is a charictaristic lip on what remains of the ventral face of the platform, and no bulbal scar is present.

Late Neolithic to Early Bronze Age barbed and tanged arrowhead (incomplete). Both barbs and tang broken off from this small arrowhead. Both faces are retouched periferally, with relatively steep retouch on the dorsal face of the blank (which has a trace of residual cortex) and more shallow invasive flaking on the ventral face. Neolithic Polished flint axe (part of). >100 x 54 x 34mm. Butt end of an axe of lenticular section, broken across - the broken end having then been flaked, possibly with the intention of re-sharpening. The narrow rounded butt is intact. The whole is patinated a creamy white with extensive spotty iron staining and two small (?manganese) concretions on the broken end. A small area of polish adjacent to the break suggests that the cutting edge and adjacent body of the axe may have been polished, as is commonly the case. c.4000 - c.2350 BC
