Object type: RETOUCHED FLAKE
Broad period: NEOLITHIC

Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
Four struck flakes, one is a simple flake tool. The three struck flakes are hard hammer struck, all are secondary with patches of cortex extant to the dorsal faces, all are of pale grey flint with darker and lighter inclusions within the flint, none are retouched though the thinner edges are recently damaged. Hinged termination to the flake, 54.5 x 33.5 x 12.5 mm. 24g. 57 x 33.5 x 12 mm. 18 g. 52 x 42 x 8 mm. 16 g. The last flake is secondary, soft hammer struck and very flat in profile, of very similar colour to the others, a patch of cortex remains to t…

Object type: RETOUCHED FLAKE
Broad period: PALAEOLITHIC
County: Norfolk
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
Possibly primary hard hammer struck flake, with the bulb of percussion broken away transversely, probably at the point of striking off the flake from the core, a few invasive flakes have been removed from the dorsal face, leaving a good amount of thin, worn cortex. The flint is thinly patinated a shade darker than the natural colour of the flint, being of black flint just below the cortex, the ventral face is streaked and mottled with lighter inclusions further into the nodule of flint. Intended use is uncertain, it could be a very basic unifacial handaxe (Wymer. J,J, type E) with one…

Object type: RETOUCHED FLAKE
Broad period: PALAEOLITHIC
County: Norfolk
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
Thick, hard hammer struck primary flake, the strike to remove this flake was positioned in a concavity behind a cortical projection on the surface of the nodule, the dorsal face is steeply retouched on one side to form a single, long edge scraper or cutting edge, it could be seen as a unifacial segmental chopper (Wymer, J,J (1999) type L "handaxe"), though these are usually bifacially knapped. The extant cortex is thin and weathered, now a patchy grey colour, the flint itself appears to be unpatinated black flint with grey, coarse inclusions mostly visible to the ventral (bulbar) face…

Broad period: NEOLITHIC
County: Norfolk
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
Tertiary hard hammer struck blade-like flake, of mid-grey flint with faint spotty iron stains to both faces, one lateral edge has two steeply retouched notches: one is semi-circular c. 10 mm wide, the other is V shaped and is certainly recent damage. The other edge has two broad, shallow concavities of steep retouch, the longer (towards the proximal end) is c. 25 mm long and has been modified from the dorsal face only, the other is retouched from the ventral face c. 13 mm long. Neolithic to Bronze Age, 4,000 to 700 BC.

Flint denticulate of probable Neolithic date. Struck off a secondary flake; the dorsal surface exhibits two parallel flake scars. It retains c. 10% cortex at the distal end. The striking platform and most of the bulb of percussion have been trimmed away. One mesal edge exhibits short, abrupt scaled retouch struck from the ventral face along the entire length, with a large notch at the proximal end. The opposite mesal edge also exhibits short, abrupt scaled retouch forming a denticulated edge. Mottled light and dark grey translucent flint.

Neolithic to Early Bronze Age retouched flint flake dating to the period c. 4000 - 701 BC. Soft hammer struck secondary flake. It retains c. 10% cortex at the distal end of the dorsal face. There are three parallel flake removal scars. The proximal end exhibits scaled low-angle retouch on both the dorsal and ventral side. Thsi has removed the bulb of percussion, however, low, widely spaced conchoidal ripple marks remain. The flint is an opaque mottled dark grey colour.

Neolithic - Late Bronze Age flint retouched flake. Struck off a tertiary flake; no cortex remains. The dorsal surface exhibits four concave removal scars. The ventral surface exhibits a small bulb of percussion with bulbar scar and radiating conchoidal ripple marks. The distal end terminates in a transverse break, possibly recent. There is evidence of short, scaled parallel retouch along one mesal edge. The flint is a semi-translucent mottled grey in colour.

Tertiary, soft hammer struck flake, of unpatinated dark grey flint with two white and buff coarse inclusions. One side of the distal end is recently broken at 45 degrees to the orientation of the flake, with steep retouch to either side of the proximal end, one side is restricted to a broad notch c. 13 mm across, the other edge is straightened by retouch (unusually) on the bulbar side from the platform to almost half-way where upon it becomes irregular towards the break.
