Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
Piercer or borer, of glossy unpatinated black and dark grey flint made from tertiary hard hammer struck flake, though a small amount of whiteish cortex remains to one side of the point, directly above this to the lateral edge is a broad, shallow notch c. 10 mm wide, above that is a smaller notch c. 7 mm wide, a third, even smaller one above this is c. 4.5 mm wide, these appear deliberately knapped on decreasing size along this edge, the opposing lateral edge is irregularly damaged/use worn but seems to have no retouch to begin with, and may have served as a obtuse angled scraper or kni…

Secondary hard hammer struck thick flake of sub-triangular cross section, the distal end has been neatly retouched to both faces to form a piercer or borer, the retouch continues towards the proximal end in two steps to one lateral edge, on the other edge the retouch is confined to the lower half of the flake. Patinated a thin brown colour, the recent chips to some of the edges show the original colour of the flint to have been swirls of greys. The dorsal ridge is slightly battered apparently in antiquity, none of the other edges have this wear, it appears the ridge itself was used in …

Tertiary hard hammer, sub-triangular struck flake, of brown/orange patinated flint, one long side of the flake is the “step” of hinged flake scar, this has made a long lip along this edge, the opposing long edge has fine retouch or use wear along its edge, the platform has been neatly trimmed from the dorsal face to straighten it. Possibly a boring tool or a drill that may have been intended to be hafted.  Neolithic, possibly early, 4,000 to 3,000 BC.

Hard hammer struck flake, of brown/orange patinated flint, small amount of cortex to the platform, both lateral edges towards the distal end broadly notched with steep retouch to the dorsal face to form a projection for drilling/boring. Bulb of percussion is set at 45 degrees to the axis of the tool. Neolithic to Bronze Age, 4,000 to 700 BC.

4 hard hammer struck sub-triangular piercers or borers, one primary, three secondary, one of mid-grey flint and the rest dark grey to black, all are unpatinated. The constrictions are slightly modified by steep retouch or use wear. Largest: 56 x 32.5 x 10 mm. Smallest: 47 x 29 x 16 mm. 54 g in total. Note: Borers are central to this image, part of a large collection of finds from this field in this batch, see other records from this finder and other ref (IND01112017JG) for full IDs.

Two hard hammer struck flakes, one tertiary with steep retouch to form the piercer/borer at the distal end, the other end is transversely and steeply retouched, removing the proximal end entirely, the other is a secondary, broad flake and is irregularly retouched to form a bifurcation, one blunt and one pointed. Both are unpatinated. Late prehistoric, Neolithic to Bronze Age. 4,000 to 701 BC. 45 x 22 x 8.5 mm. 38 x 49 x 10 mm.

Tertiary, hard hammer struck piercer or borer made from a distal end of an outre-passe flake (flake passes all the way through to the other end of the core when struck). The platform has been removed by steep retouch to form a primary borer point and a secondary point offset to one side, creating a broad notch inbetween. An unusual method of construction. Likely to be Neolithic to Bronze Age.

Neolithic to Bronze Age hard hammer struck flake of slightly orange patinated mottled grey flint. The flake is broken in half in antiquity by a transverse bending fracture, and the distal end is steeply retouched to form a (now damaged) point. Neolithic to Bronze Age primary hard hammer struck unpatinated dark brown flint boring tool or drill. The dorsal face is thermally fractured to a natural shallow ridge and the flake has been simply struck from a natural (weathered cortex) platform to produce a flat profiled point which has then trimmed with two opposed notches steeply retouched towards the proximal end, perhaps for bonding to a haft. The extreme distal tip is transversely broken. 37 x 24 x 18mm. Field WG3
