Object type: ADZE
Broad period: MESOLITHIC
County: Norfolk
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
Complete small tranchet adze, made from a larger thermal (frost/”potlid”) fracture of flint, the ventral face (the flatter of the two) carries the remnants of the interior face of this natural fracture, this area is unworked and is patinated slightly more orange/yellow than the knapped surfaces. The butt of the adze is relatively unpatinated, with a tiny patch of cortex extant to the very tip of the butt, the rest of the dorsal cortex is completely removed by flaking, this face shows the flint to have originally been mid-grey, the other parts of the adze are now patinated a…

Elongated axe or adze of extraordinary form and patination, the cutting edge and one side of the butt are damaged, as well as three smaller chips to one lateral edge, these show the flint was originally dark grey/black, the surfaces are now patinated white and dark rusty mottles the darker orange is more pronounced to the dorsal face than the ventral (flatter of the two), the edges and the high points to the flake scars of the flint is breaking down and re-corticating, especially to the paler of the two sides, all flake scars appear to be semi-hard hammer struck and neatly overlap at t…

Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
Complete geometric microlith, of mid grey flint with misty paler grey patination, of Jacobi, R. (1978) Group 4, obliquely, finely, and very steeply retouched (c. 90 degrees to the faces) to form a convex “back” to the also convex sharp edge opposing the blunt retouch, the whole flint giving a lenticular plan form with an isosceles triangle cross section. Mesolithic, possibly late due to the small size, 7,000 to 4,000 BC.

Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
Adze, of pale buff and misty light grey patinated flint, all flakes appear to be semi-hard hammer struck, the butt is flat: the only remnant of the nodule this was knapped from, it retains a much lighter, almost white patination. The cutting edge has been reshaped crudely by removing invasive flakes from dorsal face only from the cutting edge, the result is uneven. This may have been an attempt to make a shorter adze a damaged example, or a failed attempt to resharpen a blunt edge, it is clear that this piece was abandoned at this point. As the cutting edge has been modified, it is dif…

An elongated biface, all flake scars appear to be hard hammer struck, off white grading to light grey patinated flint with small spotty iron stains. The grey end is broken transversely in antiquity though only the very end is missing, this may have been the reason for discarding. The other end, although is blunted off, is knapped to shape. Mesolithic to Neolithic small pick or chisel, 10,000 to 2,350 BC. Cf. : NMS-240B78

Complete Mesolithic adze or axe, of orange and brown patinated flint, originally it would have been of grey/black flint. All flake scars appear to be hard hammer struck, especially the very large and deep removal on one face (ventral), the opposing face (dorsal) has a large tranchet flake removal to the top of the cutting edge, this would have served to sharpen the entire cutting edge in one blow, one of the defining features of Mesolithic flint knapping, the axes and adzes of the Neolithic achieved a sharp cutting edge by smaller flake removals and/or grinding and polishing the surfac…

Mesolithic opposed platform bladelet core in fresh condition: - of unpatinated mottled grey flint with a few tiny areas of iron staining, sub-triangular sectioned with an angled platform at each end, the back (ventral) of the core is knapped from the edges towards the opposite edge, 90 degrees to the flake scars on the other face, there’s a rough, light brown hollow close to the middle, this may be a void within the flint nodule or a remnant of cortex. Rejuvenation flake from the face of a small opposed platform core: - of pale patinated mottled light and mid-grey flint, a few tiny recent chips to one side are recent damage and show the original colour to have been slightly darker than it is now. All blades struck from the core appear to be soft hammer struck, both platform faces are trimmed with small flake scars to alter the angles from striking blades from the main face, the smaller platform has an awkward, small hinged scar to one side and may be the reason why the entire working blade face was removed from the core, in effect u…

Secondary soft hammer struck flake, of light grey flint, now patinated white towards the distal end and one lateral edge. The bulb of percussion has been removed/snapped off and two burin spalls have been struck down the thinner lateral edge from the side of the platform, ending with classic hinge terminations, the steeper of the lateral edges has been finely retouched on the dorsal face edge, the thinner of the lateral edges is damaged and may have been originally left sharp. Late (final) Upper Palaeolithic to Mesolithic, 12,000 to 4,000 BC.

Proximal end of a very large hard hammer struck blade of thick, sub-triangular section, the distal end is broken transversely in antiquty, the lateral edges have been steeply retouched on one side, the steeper side has been flaked on the dorsal face, the ventral face has a few flakes struck from either side in an attempt to reduce the curvature of the bulb of percussion. It is a possibility that this object was the butt end of a crude adze made from a large, elongated flake with the cutting edge broken at the mid-point by transverse bending forces, a common place and way for a f…

Thirteen small cores, most are opposed platform or multi-platform with many flake/blade scars to the working faces, all flake scars appear to be semi-soft hammer struck. The largest is partially corticated at the back where the angles do not allow removals from these surfaces, the platform is prepared by at least four flake scars, neatly making a flat surface at the correct angle to the main working face, approx. twelve flakes and blades have been struck from this main face with one fairly large flake struck from the base of the core, presumably to remedy a group of hinge termin…

Tertiary soft hammer struck blade from a single platform core, of mottled brown flint now patinated shades of brown/brown grey and white. Seven previous blade removal scars are visible to the dorsal face, one lateral edge has later edge damage that could be re-use, though this is difficult to say for certain; the fine, steep removals seem very regular and are mostly confined to the mid-point to this side and are to the dorsal face only, the ventral face has not one removal, they are certainly not patinated to the same degree as the rest of the surface but could just represent localise…

Hard hammer struck core rejuvenation flake from an opposed platform core: - of mottled grey and black flint with the occasional small iron stained scrape to both faces, one lateral edge retains thin, whitish cortex with similar iron stains and scrapes. The opposite edge to the cortex bulges out in the middle, this has caused one of the flake scars to hinge, creating a problem area on the surface of the core, it would be unlikely for further blades to be successfully struck from this face of the core, the knapper has undercut this entire area by taking this whole face of the core off …

Complete Mesolithic adze, of off-white patinated flint with spotty iron stains to both faces. Both faces are confidently knapped, creating the dorsal face with steep angles and a slightly meandering medial ridge, the ventral face has been knapped so it is much flatter, giving the adze a sub-triangular section. All flake scars appear to be hard hammer struck, there is a slight asymmetry to the plan view with one lateral edge much straighter than the other. The broader or the two ends has been sharpened with a "tranchet" flake removal, this has been struck from the side, taking a l…

Tertiary soft hammer struck flake, sub semi-circular in plan, of pale white patinated light grey flint with a slightly darker band through the middle of the flake and a few small spots of iron stains. All flake scars to the dorsal face are also soft hammer and are struck centripetally from the curved edge, the ventral face has two small remnants of the (presumably) original ventral surface of the core tool, also to the curved edge. Tertiary, soft hammer struck blade, of unpatinated pale grey mottled flint, bulb of percussion is removed, possibly at the time of striking. It does not appear retouched. The central flake scar to the dorsal face towards the distal end is struck from an opposed platform to the rest of the flake scars, possibly indicating a Mesolithic date (c.10000 - c.4000 BC. Both lateral edges are irregularly damaged, it is unclear if this damage is recent or ancient.

Object type: PERFORATED OBJECT
Broad period: MESOLITHIC
County: Norfolk
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
Perforated "mace-head", from a modified water-worn pebble of an unidentified brown banded stone, probably a glacial erratic. The perforation is slightly off-centre, and of hourglass section, the hole is pecked, and of pointed oval shape, this is due to a weaker band of stone, perforation is 8.5 x 7 mm. Surface diameter is 18.5 x 17, and on the other face it is: 16.5 x 16 mm. The smaller end of the pebble is slightly battered, presumably from use. See NMGW-A2477F for a larger example, made of Dolerite and a discussion as to the possible function of these enigmatic objects.

Three transversely snapped soft hammer struck tertiary bladelets, found together, of unpatinated mottled grey flint, two with a small amount of iron stains. All three are the proximal end, though one has a steeply retouched notch to one edge just below the platform, as the flint is unpatinated, it is difficult to tell if the breaks are intentional or accidental. Possibly Mesolithic, though could well be later in date. Largest: 27.5 x 16 x 4 mm. Notched piece: 24 x 11.5 x 3.5 mm. Smallest: 21 x 10.5 x 2 mm. 3 g in total.

Two white patinated flakes, soft hammer struck, but no retouch. The larger is quite broad and flat with mid-grey coarse inclusions. The smaller undercuts a series of hinge flakes and could very well be a tranchet re-sharpening flake removal from a Mesolithic adze or axe. Mesolithic to Early Neolithic. 56 x 35 x 7 mm. 13 g. 40 x 25 x 6 mm. 6 g.
