Record ID: LON-78CC92
Object type: SCRAPER (TOOL)
Broad period: MESOLITHIC
County: Greater London Authority
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
Complete small mesolithic end scraper, 10,000 BC-4001 BC. This is a triangular scraper, secondary flake with some remaining cortex along on edge. The distal end of the flake has been retouched with short, scaled, abrupt retouch to form the functional end of the implement. The dorsal surface has a few flake scars and a notable hinge fracture towards the proximal end. The ventral surface is smooth with some shallow rippling.

Broad period: NEOLITHIC
County: Greater London Authority
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
Large Neolithic flint scraper with retouched distal end. The scraper is made from a large tertiary flake with only a small amount of cortex remaining along the sital edge. There is a large bulb of percussion and wide rippling on the ventral side. The distal edge has been retouched with short, scaled, abrupt retouch running along the edge and round onto the flanking edges. The dorsal side is covered with large scars from previous removals. The flint is dark grey in colour with some lighter grey inclusions.

Complete Mesolithic-Neolithic thumb scraper, tertiary flake. A triangular flint flake that has been retouched around one of the rounded corners and along one edge to form the working edge of the scraper. The retouch is short, scaled and abrupt. The ventral side of the flake has shallow rippling but no obvious bulb of percussion. The dorsal side has a number of old flake scars coving it's surface with some hinge fractures.

A Neolithci flint scraper. Olive green flint scraper, tertiary flake with no cortex remaining, small bulb of percussion and shallow ripple marks on the ventral surface. The distal end of the flake is rounded and blunt, it has scaled, long, abrupt retouch along this end. Along the right edge there is short, scaled, abrupt retouch.

Large neolithic flint scraper, made from dark grey flint with some cortex remaining. This is a thick secondary flake, with a large bulb of percussion. There is a large scar on the dorsal face of the tool and white cortex covering much of the surface. The ventral face is a clean dark grey with some motling. The distal end is thick and has abrubt short scaled retouch, there is also similar retouch on one of the sides towards the striking platform.

Probable Neolithic-Bronze age scraper, probably a secondary flake, with a small amount of cortex remaining. The tool has retouch along one edge, this is short, for two thirds of the length, with some long retouch at one end. The retouch is scaled and at an abrupt angle. Flint is dark grey to black in colour with some white cortex remaining. The flake has a large bulb of percussion suggesting the use of a hard hammer and a later date for this object.

A complete mesolithic flint flake scraper. It is an uneven but rounded in shape. Previous removals can be seen as scars on the dorsal surface, all in the same direction as the ripple marks on the ventral surface. There is also possible retouching on the dorsal surface edges. The scraper is a curving and triangular in section and it measures 68.3mm (length) x 51.4mm (width) x 6.8mm (thickness) and weighs 20.70g.
Jon Cotton suggests that this flake is a re-used thinning flake from an adze, which explains its uneven shape and curving profile.
