An early Mesolithic flaked flint biface adze "Thames pick" (10,000-7,000BC). The adze has been 'roughed out' from a flint nodule or pebble. It is roughly oval in cross section. Viewed edge-on along its longitudinal axis the adze tapers slightly from the broadly rounded butt towards the more pointed cutting edge. Viewed from above, the butt and cutting edge are both rounded and the sides are approximately straight and parallel. There are signs of crushing along sections of both edges. There are numerous conchoidal fractures and large flake removal scars extending from the edges on both…

A possible incomplete early Mesolithic flaked flint biface adze "Thames pick" (10,000-7,000 BC). The adze has been broken with approximately half remaining. The adze has been 'roughed out' from a flint nodule or pebble. It is roughly oval in cross section. There are numerous conchoidal fractures and large flake removal scars extending from the edges on both faces. Patches of original cortex also remain on both faces. The flint is dark grey, with patches of vivianite which occur from prolonged contact with organic material e.g. peat or wood. Length: 75.89mm, Width: 40.60mm, thick…

A Mesolithic - early Neolithic flint blade flake dating 10,000 - 3,500BC. This is a tertiary flake of dark grey and mid grey patchy flint. It has a small, abraded striking platform at the proximal end. It was abraded to prepare the platform for blade removal. On the ventral face is a small bulb of percussion, there is a slight lip at the top of the bulb of percussion that indicates this is a soft hammer removal. On the dorsal surface are several narrow, parallel, elongate flaking scars. There is also some damage to the dorsal surface. There is no retouch present. Dimensions: len…

A Neolithic flint tool, probably a biface tranchet axehead known as a 'Thames pick' (4,000-2351BC). This tool is a 'rough out' from a flint nodule or pebble. This crushing suggests it was used as a percussor - hammerstone. There are numerous …

Two complete, mesolithic, flint bladelets, 10000BC-4000BC. 1. Small straight tertiary blade flake in grey-brown flint, three linear flake scars on dorsal surface and extremely shallow rippling on ventral. Flake is wedge shaped in profile with sharp edges. There is no sign of retouch suggesting this is debitage rather than a finished tool. Length: 49.04mm, Width: 18.47mm, thickness: 4.93mm, Weight: 5.31g 2.Small straight tertiary flake in grey-black flint, linear flake scars on dorsal surface and a slight curve at distal end. Complete small mesolithic end scraper, 10,000 BC-4001 BC. This is a triangular scraper, secondary flake with some remaining cortex along on edge. The distal end of the flake has been retouched with short, scaled, abrupt retouch to form the functional end of the implement. The dorsal surface has a few flake scars and a notable hinge fracture towards the proximal end. The ventral surface is smooth with some shallow rippling. Length: 49.53mm Width: 33.02mm Weight: 14.12g

Fragment of a mesolithic-neolithic, large flint tertiary flake, 10,000-2500BC. The fragment represents the proximal end of a large flint flake, preserving the striking platform and the bulb of percussion. The flake is oval in shape except for the distal end which is a straight break. The dorsal surface has been shaped by numerous removal scars while the ventral surface is smooth. running through the flake is a linear flaw, though this is not the cause of the break which has occurred below it. The flint is blue-black in colour but has recortified on the exterior surfaces to a blue-grey…

Possibly a fragment of a mesolithic tranchet axe that has been retouched and used as a scraper. The object is square in profile and roughly triangular in section. It has no cortex remaining on it and the dorsal surface is marked by two larger flake scars making the triangular section. The ventral surface is relatively flat with some shallow scarring from the removal of flakes at a low angle. Around the edges of the object is some crushing damage but also some suggestion of retouch that is short, abrupt and scaled. The distal end of the object is neatly formed by some smaller flake rem…

A small mesolithic - neolithic flint core that has possibly been reused as a scraper. This is a small square sectioned flint core that has been used to produce bladelets. There is also some short, scaled, abrupt retouch along one edge suggesting that the core was reused as a scraper once it had ceased to be a practical core.
