Object type: LITHIC IMPLEMENT
Broad period: NEOLITHIC
County: Shropshire
Workflow stage: Published Find published
Lithic implement from a translucent pale brown tertiary flake. (While it was recorded as an arrowhead Dr Kevin Leahy is cautious about this interpretation). The majority of working is on the dorsal face, suggesting this arrowhead was for use and not a status symbol. The artefact has been constructed in a rather odd way. The point is actually at the proximal end, while the arrows butt is at the distal end. This has created a problem with how to deal with the comparitevely large bulb of percussion. The rather crude solution has been to snap part of it off, followed by a short abrupt …

Object type: SERRATED IMPLEMENT
Broad period: NEOLITHIC
County: North Yorkshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
Early to mid Neolithic serrated implement made from a tertiary flake of pale milky grey translucent flint with small white inclusions. One side and the distal end have been worked into a fine saw. The serration was created by micro flaking (short, parallel, cross abrupt) from the dorsal and ventral sides. The side opposite the serrated edge has a single long, and three much smaller, deliberate removals for 12mm (similar to YORYM-697977). The area between this removal and the proximal has been blunted with invasive, scaled, low angle retouch 4mm inward from the edge. The tip has a high…

Early Neolithic to early Bronze Age banded pale pink rhyolite blade with an end scraper and probable side scrapers. There has been attempt to reduce one of the ridges. One face is polished by wear, providing clues as to how it was initially used, ie as a side scraper. The mesal edges have occasional retouch, mostly short, parallel, low angled. The end scraper has been produced by short to medium, scaled & crossed abrubt to semi abrupt retouch. The striking platform has been removed with a single flake and the edges of the scar retouched (medium, sub parallel, low angle). The rhyolite …

Broad period: MESOLITHIC
County: North Yorkshire
Workflow stage: Published Find published
Late Mesolithic flint microlith made from a tertiary flake of pale grey near transparent flint. It is rectangular in plan. Both the proximal and distal end terminate where they have been snapped, leaving hinge fractures. Dorsal ridge runs parallel approximately 1mm from the edge, for the entire length of the microlith. The other mesal edge, 2mm from the ridge, has extremely fine short, parallel, abrupt retouch. Dating from c7000 to c4000 BC. The length is 5mm, width 3mm, thickness 0.5mm, and the weight is less than 0.1g.

The roughout is thick-butted, double convex in section, sub-oval in plan, has crudely sub-rounded ends, and expands in plan from both the butt and the blade end to reach its maximum width 48mm from the blade end. Dates to between c2500 and c2100 BC. The length is 158mm, width 109mm, and the thickness 54mm. Other records of 'wide' rough outs or axes made from Langdale tuff include LANCUM-556645, HESH-277E48, and possibly SWYOR-B6DE55. This rock type is formed from compressed volca…

Tertiary flake of heavily patinated Langdale tuff, utilised as a chopping or scraping tool between the mid Neolithic to mid Bronze Age. The definite working is confined to the distal end. This consists of two groups of retouch. The first is invasive, scaled, and low angled. The second is short, sub- parallel, low angled, and may represent an attempt to sharpen the implement. It is difficult to account for the differences in patination on the artefact. The most likely explanation is that the older patina was gained in a different location and subsequently brought to the find spot. Date…

Neolithic, patinated off white flint, leaf shaped arrow head, fashioned from a secondary flake off a beach pebble. It has been bifacially worked with removals to 80% of its surface. The centre of the ventral appears to retain a polished surface. This may be a fortuitous result of some form of flaking, but there are no sign of conchoidal rippling so this is unlikely to be the result of artificial flaking. There is a central retained patch of cortex on the dorsal side. Dorsal retouch invasive, sub-parallel, low angled; ventral retouch invasive, parallel, low angled. Dates from c3500 to …

Crudely knapped sandstone disc, of unknown use mid nineteenth century or earlier. Possibly associated with hand loom use. A number of uses have been posited for these objects. One is pot lids, but this example shows no signs of burning or sooting or any effects of heat, and pot sherds would make better lids. However it does show a degree of wear as none of the knapped angles are sharp. See notes attached to LANCUM-D53456 for a discussion of the possible uses of this. Diameter 67mm, Thickness 16mm, Weight 123g.

Medium brown flint flake, with a lighter brown patina across most of its surface. Possibly Neolithic. It appears to have been made from a rough flake, with only the point remaining it would have been wider as there are signs of re-touching along both edges to where corners have snapped off. It has signs of removal across he entire dorsal surface to flatten it. Its shape indicates that it may have been an ogival arrow head. Length 23mm, Width 19mm, Thickness 4mm, Weight 2g.
