Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
Late Mesolithic to Early Iron Age chert microlithic burin. It has been formed on a tertiary piece of black chert debitage. There is wear gloss on most of the chert. The burin has been formed at the distal point with the removals creating a point 2mm high. A small area of low angled, scaled, semi-invasive retouch to one of the distal shoulders has produced a notch that could also be utilised as a tool. There is a series of abrupt parallel removals at the proximal end, probably to make it easier to use, and to apply pressure in particular. Probably dates to between c7000 and c400 BC, pro…

Flint flake from a blade prepared core of possible late Mesolithic to Bronze Age date. It appears to have been hit with a hard hammer (probably stone) at the base which has resulted in the fracture damage. It has fine damage around the edges, some of this could be post-depositional, but the natural more pointed tip has damage that suggests this may have been through use. Length: 30mm; width: 19mm; thickness: 8mm; weight: 5g

Mesolithic microlith barb of tertiary grey flint. Probably used as part of a composite arrow or barbed spear. There are removals to the entire surface. Almost all the retouch is pressure flaking from the ventral face and is short to semi-invasive, sub-parallel and semi-abrubt. The proximal end has been reduced, probably to aid in mounting. Dates to between c8000 and c4000 BC. Flint microliths of similar form have have been excavated at various sites throughout Britain, including Cherhill (Wiltshire) where they were dated to the early sixth millenium BC. Length 12mm, width 5mm, thic…

A convexly profiled bi-facial lithic flint, with a pointed end and a rounded base. It is uniformly black in colour. There is multi-directional flake removal on the surface of both faces and retouch particularly around its widest edge. Its size would suggest its use as a possible scraper. A dark grey flint fragment of uniform thickness, with a fairly flat butt and partially rounded distal end, which shows evidence of having being re-worked due to the possible strong hinge fracture marks across the bottom third of the ventral face. A further small flake has been removed from the end of the striking platform, showing the conchoidal fracture marks. The reverse side shows some possible pressure flaking along its lower edge, with another small flake removed centrally on the edge, again suggesting re-working or damage. The length is 28mm, the width is 24mm, thickness 8mm and…

A small, triangular shaped flake, light brown in colour with both lighter and darker inclusions. On the dorsal edge there is a previous flake scar that has been broken sharply and the flint then probably turned to be reworked. A possible striking platform at the proximal end of the ventral side is apparent, with some evidence of the longer medial edge showing retouch. The length is 31mm, the width is 19mm and the weight 1.74g.

Late Mesolithic tertiary black chert microlith. It is sub rectangular in plan & profile & triangular in section. The straight edges are formed by abrubt breaks. The cutting edge is the most curved edge and has short, sub parallel, abrubt retouch. It would have been set into wood, bone or antler as part of a composite tool. Dates to between c6500 and c4000 BC, most likely the first half of the period. Length 9.5mm, width 7mm, thickness 2mm, weight 0.19g

Late Mesolithic to Early Neolithic tertiary black chert microlith - an end scraper & burin/gouge, formed on probable microlithic debitage. There are two definite burins/gouges at the distsal end and three projections with wear gloss that have some working and appear to have been used for a similar purpose. Short, sub parallel, abrubt retouch to the end formed into a scraper. This was originally the proximal end & is evidence of reuse. The scars left when the scraper was formed have a fresher patina than elsewhere on the artefact. The date of the intial phase of working is probably c65…

Late Mesolithic to early Neolithic secondary honey flint multi platform core with some fine retouch. The presence of residual chalk on the cortex indicates the flint is derived from a 'mined' source. It also shows that the original nodule was imported into the area in its raw state with the cortex largely intact. The paucity of good quality flint in the area is probably why the core has been worked outward toward the cortex. In the case of this artefact it meant that flakes could continue be struck from a piece of flint that would been discarded in the core preparation stage in a more…

A large flake of dark flint, probably debitage which may have been shaped into a crude scraper. It appears to have been further worked, showing three removals for microliths from one edge of the dorsal side. The dorsal side has various areas of conchoidal ripples, but these appear to be from later damage rather than knapping. There is evidence of removal of a large flake at the proximal end. The ventral side retains a large area of cortex. The length is 52mm, the width is 40mm mm, and thickness is 15mm

Late Mesolithic translucent white quartz or quartzite scalene triangle, or micro-triangular, microlith, probably a barb. While it is largely the same in plan as a flint barb, it is twice as thick due the coarser crystaline structure of its raw material. There are removals to the entire surface and a dark silver grey inclusion on the centre of the dorsal side. The proximal end has been finished with a single removal. Retouch confined to the dorsal side and is covering, sub-parallel, and abrupt on one mesal, semi-abrupt on the other. The unusual choice of knapping stone, given the local…

Late Mesolithic flint microlith made from a tertiary flake of pale grey near transparent flint. It is rectangular in plan. Both the proximal and distal end terminate where they have been snapped, leaving hinge fractures. Dorsal ridge runs parallel approximately 1mm from the edge, for the entire length of the microlith. The other mesal edge, 2mm from the ridge, has extremely fine short, parallel, abrupt retouch. Dating from c7000 to c4000 BC. The length is 5mm, width 3mm, thickness 0.5mm, and the weight is less than 0.1g.
