A bifacially flaked flint handaxe dating from the Lower Palaeolithic c.500,000-250,000 BC. Description: The handaxe is quite crude but is roughly pointed wide a wider rounded butt. It has been bifacially worked, with flaking covering both sides, this has been uneven however leaving one side much thicker than the other leaving it plano-convex in cross-section. The edges are defined by invasive, scaled, low angled retouch. Some of the flaking appears to be quite haphazard leaving hinge fractures. A large irregular flint secondary waste flake, possibly of early-middle Palaeolithic date c.250 000 BC to 150 000BC. Description: The flake is roughly sub-triangular, with heavy conchoidal rippling. it terminates at one end in a hinge fracture. Some cortex remains on the dorsal face. The flint is mottled grey-blue and white, there is substantial iron staining. Measurements: 68.95mm, 56.18mm, 21.96mm thick and 87.43g in weight. Discussion: This flint has no clear retouchand in some ways resembles a large crude thinning removal from a paleolithic handaxe but a bit to thick.

It has covering scaled semi-abrupt retouch. consisting of substantial shaping removals around the upper surface and sides giving it the distinctive turtle shell shape of a levallois core. It was produced via bifacial working with one face being almost entirely destroyed by damage leaving it rough and pitted. The point is rounded and one edge of the remaining face is incomplete also. The flint is the characteristic light brown-orangey 'toffee' colour with some brown to light brown iron staining typical of Palaeolithic flint finds Measurements:79.65mm long, 57.03mm wide, 20.21mm thick and 84.75g in weight.
