A complete flint tranchet axehead of probable Early Mesolithic date (10000 BC-7000 BC). The pick is sub-rectangular in plan and sub-triangular in cross-section. It has probably been made from an elongated flint pebble. There is buff cortex on one side and part of the dorsal face. The ventral face has been knapped overall. Some of the retouch on the cutting edge has a darker patina and may indicate that the edge has been re-sharpened. The arrises are not very sharp. This implement, similar to many others found in the Isle of Wight, is probably a local product as flint is readily ava…

A complete Mesolithic flint 'Thames pick' tranchet axehead or adze (c. 9000 BC-c. 4000 BC). This implement has been made on an elongated flint nodule which has been flaked overall, except for a small area at the butt end where the cortex remains. This implement is sub-rectangular in plan and side view, sub-square in cross-section. Mid-way along its length, two of the four faces are 'waisted'. The sharp cutting edge is formed by oblique removal of two 'tranchet' flakes. A small portion at the butt end has been battered indicating that the implement may also have been used as a hamme…

A complete Mesolithic flint adze or pick-like axehead (c. 10000-c. 4000 BC). This implement, manufactured on an elongated pebble, is sub-rectangular in plan. It is sub-triangular in cross-section close to the butt end and roughly pointed-oval close to the cutting edge. The butt end is rounded and has some cortex and the cutting edge has been crudely fashioned (not a true tranchet removal). One face is convex and the opposite face is flatter. Where it has been knapped it is orange and crisp. Off-white cortex on both faces is worn. This implement, a surface find in ploughsoil, …
