Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
An irregular struck flake of Neolithic date (4000-2500 BC). The flake has been struck in multiple directions during the tertiary phase of the tool production most probably during the making of a large core tool - the flake shows multiple removals in opposing directions on the dorsal face. It is relatively thin and a mid grey colour. It is possible that it may have been worked along one edge to form a crude scraper The flake measures 28.1mm in length, 13.7mm width, is 6.6mm thick and weighs 2.89 grams.

A snapped flint waste flake (debitage) from tool production of probable earleir Neolithic date (4000 - 2100 BC). The flake is broadly rectangular in plan and sub-triangular cross section. The flake has been snapped from a larger blade like flake and reworked along one edge on the dorsal face to create a crude cutting edge. It is highly likely that this flake was a by-product (or waste flake / debitage) of tool making; if this is the case then it is from the tertiary (3rd) phase of flaking as all the cortex has been removed. This waste flake has then been re-used or utilised to form a …

A snapped flint waste flake (debitage) from tool production of probable Neolithic date (3500 - 2100 BC). The flake is broadly in oval plan and sub-triangular cross section. The flake has been snapped from a larger blade like flake and reworked along one edge on both ventral and dorsal faces to create a crude cutting edge. It is highly likely that this flake was a by-product (or waste flake / debitage) of tool making; if this is the case then it is from the secondary phase of flaking as the dorsal face has around 50% of the cortex remaining. This waste flake has then been re-used or ut…

Object type: ARROWHEAD
Broad period: NEOLITHIC
County: Shropshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A complete late Neolithic oblique (British oblique) flint arrowhead. This arrowhead has been created from a mid - dark brown coloured piece of flint. It is broadly triangular in plan and lentoid in cross section. The arrowhead has been knapped using a number of different techniques, including direct and indirect percussion, as well as pressure / ripple / invasive flaking. It is unsymmetrical in shape; a barb extends at one corner creating a curved tang. Both the long edges of the arrowhead have been retouched to create sharp serrated blades. One face of the arrowhead has received mor…

An irregular tertiary debitage / waste flake of probable Neolithic date (3500-2100 BC). In plan and profile the flake is irregular. There is no evidence of any reworking although the dorsal face has several removals suggesting this is waste from a larger core tool. The ventral face shows a large bulbar scar and a point of percussion where the flake was removed from a larger core. One edge has been heavily abraded - almost ground - through constant striking - therefore it may have been used as a fire making / spark generating / strike-alight type tool. The flint is a mid dark grey colo…

A near complete leaf-shaped arrowhead of probable Neolithic date (2900 - 2150 BC). The arrowhead is formed on a mid brown grey coloured tertiary flint flake; both the dorsal and ventral faces are extensively retouched. The butt of the arrowhead has been trimmed and extensively reworked removing any trace of striking platform or bulb of percussion. The butt is rounded. In profile the arrowhead is also lentoid. The shape of the arrowhead could be described as ogival. Both the dorsal and ventra…

The dorsal is broadly a tablet shaped and the long edges have well organised short, sub-parallel and abrupt retouch. The flint is a mid grey brown colour with a well formed surface patina. Small flint flake possibly debitage probably dating from the Neolithic period (3500 - 2100 BC). The flake is broadly sub-rectangular in both plan and profile. It has a number of facets (caused by flaking) on both sides however the bulb of percussion has been lost. There is cortex (rough outer skin of the flint nodule) present which suggests that this flake comes from the tertiary phase of tool production. There is slight evidence for secondary reworking on one edge however, the flint has been plough rolled and a number of the facets present are due to this damage. The flint is of a li…
