Object type: SCRAPER (TOOL)
Broad period: NEOLITHIC
County: Gloucestershire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A large oval shaped end and side scraper formed on a specifically prepared secondary flake dating from the Neolithic or early Bronze Age periods (3500-2100 BC). The ventral face shows conchoidal ripples and the bulb of percussion; the proximal end has a distinct prepared platform showing good preparation of the core prior to striking . The dorsal face has a number of regular flake removal scars along with an area on the back of mid yellow mottled cortex (possibly acting as a grip for use). The entire crescentic edge of the opposing side has been reworked / retouched with steep angled …

Object type: BARBED AND TANGED ARROWHEAD
Broad period: NEOLITHIC
County: Gloucestershire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A near complete Early Bronze Age barbed and tanged flint arrowhead. This arrowhead has been knapped from a mottled mid grey white coloured piece of flint. It is broadly sub-triangular in plan and lentoid in cross section. The arrowhead has been knapped using a number of different techniques, including direct and indirect percussion, as well as pressure / ripple / invasive flaking. Originally it was broadly symmetrical in shape; however due to movement within the soil one barb and the tip are lost due to recent unpatinated breaks. Both the long sides of the arrowhead have been retouch…

Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A flaked flint scraper of later Neolithic or Early bronze Age date (3000-1800BC). The scraper is broken and incomplete it is formed on a blong blade like flake of tertiary debitage. The scraper / knife is broadly oval in plan and lentoid in cross section. The ventral face suggests it was struck in the opposite direction to the working on the dorsal face. The dorsal has a series of long diagonal parallel sided wasting / thinning flakes present and the edges have been retouched with well organised short, sub-parallel and semi-abrupt pressure flaking. The flint is a mid grey white colour…

Object type: BLADE
Broad period: MESOLITHIC
County: Gloucestershire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
An incomplete snapped flint blade of probable later Mesolithic or early Neolithic date (6000BC - 3500BC). The flint tool, probably best described as a knife, is broadly sub-rectangular in plan and sub-triangular in cross section. The blade has been snapped and the point is lost - the break is unpatinated and is likely to be an artefact of movement in the soil. The bulb of percussion and striking / knapping platform are present on the lower (ventral) face. The upper (dorsal) face of the blade has a number of clear facets and ridges. Both the long edges have been retouched on the dorsa…

Two flint blades of later Mesolithic date (4000 -3000 BC). Both blades are rectangular in plan and have crested (triangular shaped) cross sections. They are both snapped and incomplete; there is no evidence of striking platform or bulb of percussion. The larger blade is a mid grey colour with a mid grey blue surface patina. There is no sign of retouch present. It measures: 29.6mm in length, 14.4mm width, is 10.2mm thick and weighs 4.10 grams. The smaller blade is a mid mottled grey colour and is struck from particularly poor flint; there is a large patch of cortex on the low…

Object type: THUMB NAIL SCRAPER
Broad period: NEOLITHIC
County: Gloucestershire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
Struck flint scraper of later Neolithic or Early Bronze Age date (2900-1800 BC). The scraper is broadly oval in shape being formed from a relatively thick piece of flint; it is oval in cross section. It is likely that the flint represents reuse of debitage (waste flakes from tool making) as a small area of cortex survives. The upper dorsal face of the scraper exhibits a large number of flake scars suggesting that this piece has been heavily worked / reworked. The ventral face is flat with a series of conchoidal ripples and the remains of the bulb of percussion. The striking platform ha…

Struck flint blade of probable earlier Neolithic date (3500-2900 BC). The blade is sub-rectangular in plan and lentoid in cross section, the upper, dorsal, face has a series of longitudinal flake scars, whilst the reverse is plain and flat with evidence of conchoidal ripples. The bulb of percussion on the ventral face is lost and the edge is snapped suggesting the blade would have originally been longer. The two long edges on the dorsal face have significant areas of retouch; this is relatively fine and suggests secondary pressure flaking to create a fine regular serrated edge. The end…

Struck debitage flake of white coloured chert which has been reused to form an irregular multi sided scraper, of probably later Neolithic date (2500 – 2000 BC). The flake is broadly triangular in plan and lentoid in cross section. It has been struck from one edge, although the bulb of percussion is indistinct and the striking platform has been removed by subsequent reworking. All three edges of the flake have scars from secondary flaking or retouch. Most of these seem abrupt or direct retouch / flaking caused by striking with a hard hammer rather than pressure or indirect flaking. Th…

Incomplete snapped flint blade of probable late Mesolithic date (6000BC - 3500BC). The flint tool, probably best described as a knife, is broadly sub-rectangular in plan and sub-triangular in cross section. The bulb of percussion is not present however conchoidal fractures on the lower (ventral) face of the blade suggest that this is from the upper part of the blade. The upper (dorsal) face of the blade has a number of clear facets and ridges. These have been heavily trimmed through secondary flaking. This is almost ripple like in places being formed by pressure flaking. There are seve…

Side and End scraper of dating from the Neolithic period (2900 - 2100 BC). The flake is broadly sub-rectangular in plan and profile. It is likely that this was formed from the upper part of a blade like flake. The upper part of the blade was snapped and there is clear evidence for this at the butt of the flake. The upper (dorsal) face of the flake has a series of linear scar facets whilst the lower (ventral) face shows evidence of conchoidal fractures. The dorsal end and sides of the dorsal face have been reworked to create the scraper; this is evident in the small regular areas of ret…
