Object type: AXEHEAD
Broad period: NEOLITHIC
County: Gwynedd
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A near complete probable polished stone axehead dating from the Neolithic period. The axe is sub-rectangular in plan, oval in cross section. The axehead tapers outwards with slightly convex sides from the narrower butt to the curving cutting edge. The butt of the axe may be slightly truncated. Both faces of the axe have been polished as evident from the smooth surface of the stone as well as visible markings on the faces. There are chippings present on the stone, as well as what appear to be natural grooves and irregularities in the surface. The two nearest axe sources within the …

Object type: ROUGHOUT
Broad period: NEOLITHIC
County: Conwy
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A neolithic stone axe roughout. The piece is roughly sub rectangular in form, oval in cross section. From the predominantly flat butt, the sides run parallel before tapering to a rounded end (which if completed would have formed the cutting edge of the axe). Both sides of the roughout are gently convex. Visible flakes have been knapped from the roughout, and the piece resembles the rough shape of an axe, however the find has been discarded prior to completion. Roughouts may have been discarded for several reasons, including the thickness of the stone, or fracturing/damage …

Object type: FLAKE
Broad period: NEOLITHIC
County: Gwynedd
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A probable prehistoric flint flake, possibly dating to the Neolithic period. The flake is a mixture of light and dark reddish browns in colour. There is evidence of the cortex along one edge. The flake is retouched, with apparent earlier blade/flake removals evident on the dorsal face. The bulb of percussion is visible, although it is difficult to identify any concentric waves along the ventral face which may indicate it is of natural origin. There is a small chip just below the bulb of percussion which suggests it is anthropogenic and as such this is probably a retouched flake (Shopl…

Object type: BARBED AND TANGED ARROWHEAD
Broad period: BRONZE AGE
County: Gwynedd
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A sub-triangular, barbed and tanged flint arrowhead. The arrowhead is quite crude in form. It is manufactured from a mainly opaque mid greenish brown flint but with a band of white around the point, and the tip of the point is translucent orange. The extreme tip of the point appears to have broken off in antiquity. One face of the arrowhead is very slightly concave, the other is very slightly convex. There are two large patches of cortex surviving on both faces of the object. In plan, the two side edges are slightly curvilinear giving the point a narrow and extended appearance. The e…

Object type: DEBITAGE
Broad period: NEOLITHIC
County: Gwynedd
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
Long struck stone blade (flake). It is made from a 'tuff' which is a metamorphosed sedimentary stone of particularly fine texture. That is to say, the stone was originally sedimentary but has been altered by later geological processes (as opposed to a purely volcanic stone such as at the axe factory site at Graig Lwyd). The blade has been snapped off at both ends. The back of the blade probably represents the original surface of the worked stone. All the other surfaces are now covered in a light greyish patina except for an oval notch knocked out of the sharp edge of the blade where t…

Object type: SCRAPER (TOOL)
Broad period: NEOLITHIC
County: Gwynedd
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
Possible broken stone axe or scraper. Very irregular sub-trapezoidal shaped stone, the ends are roughly parallel but the edges converge towards the butt end. Heavy cream coloured patina survives on much of the upper face of the object but has been removed on the lower surface and edges. The wider end has been worked with the removal of quite large flakes by invasive, stepped, and abrupt retouch. The other narrower end appears to be roughly broken rather than worked. One edge of the object has also been very roughly worked or possibly broken. The other edge retains its natural profile …

Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
Sub-hexagonal shaped flint scraper. The flint is generally a mid-grey colour, however one face of the object is largely covered in a light cream cortex representing the original surface of the pebble. This face is quite irregular and one edge has also been struck producing two small facets where the cortex has been removed. There is no sign of retouch on this edge. The other side represents a large flake surface with a prominent bulb, a plain platform with hammer impact, and short, abrupt, scaled retouch on one of the opposing edges. Discussion: The object represents a complete f…

Object type: CORE
Broad period: UNKNOWN
County: Gwynedd
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
Semi-prismatic core. The flint is generally a mid-grey in colour, but one face appears to have developed a slight white patina suggesting this may have been an original 'natural' surface of the flint pebble prior to working. The other face has areas of rusty brown staining which may be iron oxide deposits from the soil. The flint has been subjected to neat, regular single direction flaking in order to produce parallel-sided flakes or blades. Discussion: The core appears to have been designed to produce blades so it is probably Mesolithic or Neolithic in origin. In shape it is ver…

Object type: GUNFLINT
Broad period: POST MEDIEVAL
County: Isle of Anglesey
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
The gunflint is a dark grey in colour and trapezoidal in plan and in section. The dorsal face is very flat representing one large facet with a small concave scar at one edge probably the result of later damage. The wider 'striking' edge of the flint has been trimmed by short, abrupt scaled retouch carried out from the ventral face to produce the striking surface. There appears to be some minor evidence of battering along this edge suggesting light use before loss or discard. The butt is quite blunt and steep and is the thickest part of the flint, with the body thinning as it proceeds …

Semi-circular flint object, dark brownish grey in colour. It has a flat back edge which narrows to a sharp semi-circular outer edge. Several parts of this semi-circular edge show signs of short, abrupt retouch. The back comprises two main concave scars with a small area of cortex on one. One face of the object displays a bulb and ripples indicating it was struck off of a larger piece. The other face has multiple concave scars where flakes have been struck from the object. Discussion: The object appears to have only recently been ploughed out as it is very fresh and there is litt…

Very large blade fragment. 128 (incomplete) x 32 x 9mm. Dark grey weathered to a creamy grey. Recent damage shows a coarse material, most likely Mynydd Rhiw tuff. Retains some natural(?) fracture surface. Unworked. Assessment: Certainly not a waste product of axe manufacture but probably Later Neolithic. Other similar large blades have been found at Parwyd, Llyn, PRN 3296. (George Smith, Gwynedd Archaeological Trust)

Approximately half(?) of a flaked and ground stone Graig Lwyd axe comprising the butt end. Narrow oval in section. The long side edges are facetted, or flattened and measure 6.62mm wide towards the front and narrowing to 4.69mm wide at the butt. This feature doesn't continue around the butt edge. Overall the surface is generally smooth but irregular with several of the deeper flaking sites surviving as shallow, rough concave scars and more particularly on one face than the other. There are a couple of nicks out of the butt end edge which appear more modern showing little patenation. T…

Sub-triangular shaped flint flake, pale yellow to amber in colour. The flake has been struck from one point of the 'triangle'. The dorsal side is nearly completely covered in a shiny cream coloured cortex. The ventral side comprises a very flat flaked surface with a slight bulb and pronounced ripples. Both edges of the 'triangle' exhibit evidence of rough retouch while the base of the 'triangle' (distal end of the flake) appears to be the result of an irregular fracture possibly during manufacture as the retouch appears to run along part of the fractured edge. It is possible that this…

Sub circular stone implement, lenticular in section. It is fashioned from a fine dark greenish gray, close grained, hard stone containing frequent white flecks. One side is very smooth, the other appears to have been flaked or split leaving a rougher irregular surface. The proximal end is thick and has what appears to be part of the original surface still surviving at the top of the ventral side; the implement thins towards the distal end. There is what appears to be very rough retouch around the edges away from the butt. This is mostly visible on the dorsal side suggesting it was wor…

Object type: FLAKE
Broad period: MESOLITHIC
County: Gwynedd
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A scatter of flints found in 1998. According to the finder they were found on the seaward side of a field wall near Ogof Llwyd, at Penrhyn, east of Aberdaron. They comprise 10 small flakes and blades, some of which may have been formed by natural processes. The majority are broken and may be waste flakes left as the result of knapping. Due to the occurrences of cortex in relation to flake size, it is likely that the flakes are the result of working pebbles.
