Object type: AXEHEAD
Broad period: NEOLITHIC
County: Gwynedd
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
A near complete probable polished stone axehead dating from the Neolithic period.
The axe is sub-rectangular in plan, oval in cross section. The axehead tapers outwards with slightly convex sides from the narrower butt to the curving cutting edge. The butt of the axe may be slightly truncated.
Both faces of the axe have been polished as evident from the smooth surface of the stone as well as visible markings on the faces. There are chippings present on the stone, as well as what appear to be natural grooves and irregularities in the surface.

Object type: ROUGHOUT

A neolithic stone axe roughout.
The piece is roughly sub rectangular in form, oval in cross section. From the predominantly flat butt, the sides run parallel before tapering to a rounded end (which if completed would have formed the cutting edge of the axe). Both sides of the roughout are gently convex.
Visible flakes have been knapped from the roughout, and the piece resembles the rough shape of an axe, however the find has been discarded prior to completion. Roughouts may have been discarded for several reasons, including the thickness of the stone, or fracturing/damage …

Object type: FLAKE
Broad period: NEOLITHIC
County: Gwynedd
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
A probable prehistoric flint flake, possibly dating to the Neolithic period. The flake is a mixture of light and dark reddish browns in colour. There is evidence of the cortex along one edge. The flake is retouched, with apparent earlier blade/flake removals evident on the dorsal face. The bulb of percussion is visible, although it is difficult to identify any concentric waves along the ventral face which may indicate it is of natural origin. There is a small chip just below the bulb of percussion which suggests it is anthropogenic and as such this is probably a retouched flake (Shopl…

Long struck stone blade (flake). It is made from a 'tuff' which is a metamorphosed sedimentary stone of particularly fine texture. That is to say, the stone was originally sedimentary but has been altered by later geological processes (as opposed to a purely volcanic stone such as at the axe factory site at Graig Lwyd). The blade has been snapped off at both ends. The back of the blade probably represents the original surface of the worked stone. All the other surfaces are now covered in a light greyish patina except for an oval notch knocked out of the sharp edge of the blade where t…

Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
Possible broken stone axe or scraper. Very irregular sub-trapezoidal shaped stone, the ends are roughly parallel but the edges converge towards the butt end. Heavy cream coloured patina survives on much of the upper face of the object but has been removed on the lower surface and edges. The wider end has been worked with the removal of quite large flakes by invasive, stepped, and abrupt retouch. The other narrower end appears to be roughly broken rather than worked. One edge of the object has also been very roughly worked or possibly broken. The other edge retains its natural profile …

Very large blade fragment. 128 (incomplete) x 32 x 9mm. Dark grey weathered to a creamy grey. Recent damage shows a coarse material, most likely Mynydd Rhiw tuff. Retains some natural(?) fracture surface. Unworked.
Assessment:
Certainly not a waste product of axe manufacture but probably Later Neolithic. Other similar large blades have been found at Parwyd, Llyn, PRN 3296.

Approximately half(?) of a flaked and ground stone Graig Lwyd axe comprising the butt end. Narrow oval in section. The long side edges are facetted, or flattened and measure 6.62mm wide towards the front and narrowing to 4.69mm wide at the butt. This feature doesn't continue around the butt edge. Overall the surface is generally smooth but irregular with several of the deeper flaking sites surviving as shallow, rough concave scars and more particularly on one face than the other. There are a couple of nicks out of the butt end edge which appear more modern showing little patenation. T…

Sub-triangular shaped flint flake, pale yellow to amber in colour. The flake has been struck from one point of the 'triangle'. The dorsal side is nearly completely covered in a shiny cream coloured cortex. The ventral side comprises a very flat flaked surface with a slight bulb and pronounced ripples. Both edges of the 'triangle' exhibit evidence of rough retouch while the base of the 'triangle' (distal end of the flake) appears to be the result of an irregular fracture possibly during manufacture as the retouch appears to run along part of the fractured edge. It is possible that this…

Sub circular stone implement, lenticular in section. It is fashioned from a fine dark greenish gray, close grained, hard stone containing frequent white flecks. One side is very smooth, the other appears to have been flaked or split leaving a rougher irregular surface. The proximal end is thick and has what appears to be part of the original surface still surviving at the top of the ventral side; the implement thins towards the distal end. There is what appears to be very rough retouch around the edges away from the butt. This is mostly visible on the dorsal side suggesting it was wor…

Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
Neolithic Graig Lwyd roughout found eroding out of a bank. It has been bifacially-worked and has well-defined flake removals. However, it has been subject to erosion for some time and as such all edges are smooth
The axe has a prominent butt. A dark greyish-brown patina has built up on parts of the object and contrasts with the light brownish-grey colour of the stone.

This axe is unusually big. It has a dark grey patina, particularly on one face. The remainder of the object has a mottled grey/orange/brown appearance.

Object type: BLADE
Broad period: NEOLITHIC

Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
Orange-brown-coloured flint blade, with a minimum of three earlier blade removals visible on the dorsal face. The bulb of percussion is clearly visible on the ventral face, as are ripples running conversely across the length of this face.
It has been truncated at the point of percussion: this is known to have taken place since it was found, roughly 20 years ago. Similarly, there may be some retouch along the edges of the blade, although this may have also been caused by damage since its discovery.

Object type: CORE
Broad period: NEOLITHIC
County: Gwynedd
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
Flint core, probably Neolithic, from a small nodule of flint. Cortex is present on two sides of the core, and several blade removals are visible.
The flint is dark grey in colour, and has been chipped on every angle, presumably from the action of knocking against pebbles on the stony beach at Porth Dinllaen.
Nodules of flint were brought to this area from elsewhere. Therefore this core is probably Neolithic (as opposed to Mesolithic) in date, because items were more likely to have been transported around at this time. However the possibility that the core is Mesolithic should…
