Object type: AXEHEAD
Broad period: NEOLITHIC
County: Nottinghamshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A complete axe head of late neolithic date (c. 3000 - 2000 BC), hand knapped and pecked from a dark dense, probably igneous rock, although the original surface is hard to determine due to the abundance of peck marks.  The axe is broadly a pointed oval in plan and is sub-oval (humped) in cross section. In plan the axe head tapers from a rounded cutting edge to a blunted point at the butt. In profile it is thickest at the mid-point and tapers towards the butt and cutting edge. The cutting edge is well formed, mostly intact except for small chips; the surface of the axe is …

Object type: ARROWHEAD
Broad period: NEOLITHIC
County: Derbyshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
An complete flint Neolithic leaf shaped arrow head. There is retouch on both faces. The flint is opaque blue-grey. The flint is 32 mm in length, 21.5 mm in width and 5mm thick, weight is 3g. It is leaf shaped tapering to a flat base, probably the result of a break. The edges are worked down to the break, it is possible the base was rounded, as in Green's type 1A. ( Green 1980 fig 26)

Broad period: BRONZE AGE
County: Derbyshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A chert Beaker Period to Middle Bronze Age barbed and tanged arrowhead, dating to c. 2400 - 1000 BC. The arrowhead is formed from a tertiary flake of light greyish white, opaque chert. It is triangular with two notches formed at the base to create the barbs and central tang. It has a lozenge-shaped cross-section. The arrowhead has been bi-facially worked with the removal of many small flakes to create its shape. The retouch is covering, scaled, low angled. The arrowhead appears to have not been finished; one face has not been fully retouched leaving a raised lump. The chert also ha…

Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A small assemblage of 14 pieces of Mesolithic chert debitage, c9000 - 4000BC, all recovered from the same location. The implements are debitage, or waste material, produced during the knapping process. The ventral surfaces of several pieces display waves of percussion, from the striking process and the dorsals display evidence of some flake removal. None of the pieces show signs of any retouch. All are tertiary flakes. The largest blade, is a dark grey translucent flint, with small striking platform, small bulb and waves of percussion on its ventral surface, some flake removal from th…

The object is made flint with a mottled light grey and cream coloured opaque patina covering the entire surface of the object. There are small patches of re-cortication on the surface. It is a tertiary flake with no sign of the original cortex remaining and is roughly triangular in plan and plano-convex in cross-section, with a pointed distal end. A small striking platform is evident at the proximal end. This is not centrally placed, but offset to one side. A bulb of percussion extends from this pl…

Object type: LITHIC IMPLEMENT
Broad period: BRONZE AGE
County: Nottinghamshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A patinated flint implement, possibly a reworked natural flake or earlier debitage. Dr Kevin Leahy says: "the utilisation of natural flint was a practice characteristic of the Later Bronze Age and Iron Age". The surface shows a recorticated patina with what may be iron staining. Rough scaled retouching along the edge seems to cut this recortication, suggesting re-use. There is what may be a burin at the tip of the implement. Length 51.9 mm, width 16.7 mm, thickness 8.8 mm. Weight 8.4 g

A piece of flint debitage probably of middle/late Bronze Age date (c. 1600 - c. 800 BC). Flint, pale grey, opaque, all surfaces covered with pale orange-yellow patina. Red iron staining on both faces suggesting movement within a river. Broadly triangular in plan with one convex edge and curved corners; trapezoidal in cross-section. Tertiary working, hard hammer: the ventral face has a large bulb of percussion at the proximal end. Possible short, scaled, semi abrupt retouch on small areas of the edge of ventral face, but this may be ancient damage. Overall, the object measures 38.7 mm

Broadly triangular in plan with convex edges and curved corners; rectangular to lozenge-shaped in cross-section. Primary working, hard hammer: the ventral face has a large bulb of percussion at the proximal end with concentric ripples radiating from the bulbar scar. Possible short, scaled, semi abrupt retouch on distal edge of dorsal face, but this is only in the cortex so is probably damage rather than retouch. Length 46.1mm, width 4…

Object type: TRANCHET AXEHEAD
Broad period: MESOLITHIC
County: Wiltshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A flint tranchet axehead from the early Mesolithic period (c.9000 - 8000 BC). The flint is a dark brownish-grey and fairly opaque with elements of the cortex visible. The axe is crudely worked, with a rounded cutting edge, roughly parallel sides and a pointed butt. It has a broadly triangular cross-section. The flint appears to be in the second stage of being worked due to the patches of cortex on its butt and and its ventral and dorsal faces. Also, a soft hammering technique seems to have been used, identifiable by the weak ripple marks and low bulbs of percussion. The broad shape of…
