Object type: CORE
Broad period: MESOLITHIC
County: Lincolnshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A probable flint core or possible core rejuvenation flake provisionally dated to the late Mesolithic period, (7000-4001BC). The object is wedge-shaped rather than the more typical conical shape and is therefore triangular in cross-section. It has a single large rounded rectangular striking platform and evidence of parallel struck narrow blades on one face only. The core retains approximately 15% coverage of cortex. The core is a mottled mid-light grey in colour.

An incomplete Prehistoric rounded scraper of probable Neolithic date, c. 4000 BC-c. 2350 BC. This implement is an incomplete suboval in plan and roughly D-shaped in cross-section. The dorsal face has been knapped overall and has finer knapping along the sides and one end but this has suffered considerable post-depositional damage. The surviving removals appear scaled and semi-abrupt. On the ventral face there is a trace of the bulb of percussion but other details have been lost through damage. This implement is of matt mottled grey-cream colour. See Butler 2005: p.126-128. …

The dorsal face has been knapped overall and has finer knapping along the sides and one end but this has suffered considerable post-depositional damage. A complete flint plano-convex knife of Late Neolithic to Early Bronze Age date (c.2700 BC to c.1600 BC). The knife is of an elongated pointed sub-oval shape, with a flat, hinge fracture at the distal end. The knife has a D shaped cross section. The flint is of a dark mottled grey-brown colour. Remains of the cortex (outer rind) are present along the midline of the dorsal surface and this is an orange-brown colour. The knife has been made from a piece of secondary debitage. Extensive invasive, almost 'covering', retouch is present along both edges of the dorsal surface but other…

An incomplete flint possible scraper or possible uncompleted tool probably dating from the Neolithic period, c.4000 BC - 2200 BC. The tool is formed on a tertiary flake of dark grey-cream mottled, opaque flint. When complete the flake was probably sub-oval in plan but is now teardrop shaped with an old flat edged break running diagonally down from the bulb of percussion removing part of the scraping edge. It is notable that the patina of this break matches that on the rest of the flake indicating that the break is not more recent. The retouch to create the presumed scraping edge is…

Lithic Implement: Neolithic flint scraper. The tool has been formed from a tertiary flake with no outer cortex from the original flint nodule remaining Due to damage the upper part of the original flake has been damaged meaning that the striking platform and bulb of percussion has been lost. The ventral surface has, however, retained the characteristic radiating ripples from the knapping process. The scraping edge of the tool has been formed via abrupt retouching, creating a steep-sided scraping edge. The flint has a dark grey-brown patina. Although such tools probably had varied us…

Complete but weathered lithic implement of Neolithic date. The flint has been categorised as a leaf shaped knife. There is extensive invasive retouch on both faces. Abrupt retouch along the sides, to form the cutting edge, can also be seen but the item has suffered considerably from post-depositional damage. One face of the knife is notably more smoothed with pitting and slight iron staining as if this side of the item has suffered exposure to the elements. Overall the flint has a creamy beige-grey patina. The knife is dated broadly to the Neolithic period c.3500-2100 BC.

Flint blade debitage of probable Mesolithic to Neolithic date, c. 8300-2100 BC. The flake has three blade removal scars on the dorsal face and there is no cortex remaining, making this a tertiary flake. There is no evidence of retouch along the edges of this particular piece although it should be noted that the item has suffered post depositional damage along the edges. Debitage refers to waste flakes which have not then been retouched which are produced during flint working. The flint is orange brown in colour.

Lithic Implement: Flint scraper of later Neolithic to early Bronze Age date; c.2500 BC to 1500 BC. The scraper is formed of a chunky flake, roughly oval in section and tongue-shaped in plan. There are invasive removals on both faces and abrupt retouch, forming the scraping edge, on the distal edge (the end opposite the striking platform). The striking platform still has cortex remaining on the surface. The scraping edge has suffered post depositional damage. The flint is mottled yellow brown & dark grey in colour.

A near complete knapped lithic knife of Neolithic to early Bronze Age date. The knife, which is an elongated oval in plan and slightly convex in cross-section with the apex in cross section being off-centre is bi-facialy worked with extensive retouch. Due to extensive invasive retouch the original attributes of the flint flake from which the knife was formed have being lost (ie. striking platform, ripples and bulb of percussion). The distal edge of the knife has been invasively retouched on both the ventral and dorsal faces to form an arched tip and this retouch then continues on …

Lithic Implement/Debitage: A single tertiary debitage flake (with only a tiny area cortex remaining) possibly reworked into a scraper. Traces of abrupt retouch are notable along one edge of the flake but due to more recent damage it is not possible to say for certain if the flake was reworked into a tool, such as a scraper. The flint is of a near opaque greyish-brown colour. Dated to the Neolithic, c.3500 BC to 2100 BC. Please see other records from this area for associated finds, including tools, flakes and debitage.

Lithic Implement: Near complete small flint probable discoidal knife of Late Neolithic to Early Bronze Age date. Due to peripheral damage it is not possible to confidently identify this implement but it appears to be too thick for use as a leaf-shaped arrowhead and therefore discoidal knife is the present preferred interpretation. The remainder of the debitage consists of 3 secondary, and possibly one primary removal fragment, with more extensive cortex coverage and with the removals being notably thicker and less uniform in shape and size suggesting that these removals formed part of the preparation st…

Lithic Implement: Incomplete possible end scraper of probable Neolithic date. The flake, from which the tool is made is a secondary flake with cortex covering one of the sides, more recent damage may have removed further areas of cortex and the tool does not appear to be complete. The probable scraping edge clearly has fine retouch although due to more recent damage this area is incomplete hence the difficulty in categorising this artefact as a specific tool. The tool does have the classic negative scar on the distal face, where the thumb would sit in order to apply pressure during us…

Lithic Implement: Incomplete small flint scraper of probable Neolithic, possibly Mesolithic, date. The flake, from which the scraper is made is a secondary flake with extensive cortex covering the dorsal face.
