Record ID: CPAT-30CA92
Object type: THUMB NAIL SCRAPER
Broad period: NEOLITHIC
County: Shropshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
This small flint Neolithic thumb nail scraper has a semi-circular edge profile with a flat proximal end showing some remaining platform. In profile, it is a relatively thin oblong section. The ventral surface has a diffuse bulb of percussion with erailleur scars. The dorsal surface has several negative scars from the shaping process. The working edge, or distal end of the tool, exhibits some fine pressure, or perhaps soft hammer flaking resulting in approximately 15 channel or fluted flakes to give the final working edge. The edge angle is approximately 60 degrees. The tool is…

This Lithic tool is a finely crafted, small Thumb nail scraper of probable Neolithic date. The working, distal edge of the tool is horseshoe in profile and is defined by approximately 15 pressure, or soft hammer flutes/channel flakes. The proximal end has a clear platform, some erailleur scars and a diffuse bulb of percussion. The dorsal surface has been further shaped with closely worked, long parallel channel flakes, perhaps to make the tool more comfortable in use. It has a thick cross section and a relative steep edge angle of approximately 80 degrees. The edge bears signs…

A chunk of secondary flint that may have been an implement of Neolithic origin. The section is thick at 11.45mm but there are signs of it having been worked. The ventral surface has a bulb of percussion with bulbar scaring and the dorsal face has two dorsal ridges and scarring with the remnants of cortex. The lower edge has then been re-touched with conchoidal scarring along the edge. In use it would perhaps have been a scraper. The material is a dark brown flint with small light and dark pinpoint inclusions

A discoidal flint flake of probable Neolithic date that may have been used as a side scraper. There is a very pronounced bulb of percussion and rippling to the ventral surface. The dorsal side has cortex covering over approximately 30% of its surface and a single ridge, much of the remaining surface has distinct rippling from previous removals. The scraping edge (25mm long) exhibits apparently deliberate retouch along approximately half of its length (14mm). The material is a mid-brown flint with some darker 'cloudy' inclusions.

This is an interesting piece of flint, found in the same vicinity of four other lithic tools. At first glance it might appear to be debitage or a waste core; however, it does have signs of further working beyond being a simple flake. There is a large piece of cortex remaining but it is difficult to be clear as to which is the proximal end. The ventral undulating surface is marked by two longitudinal fractures with associated conchoidal scars that may be the result of stress fracturing within the piece. The narrower end is broken off, leaving an end that may have been pointed at ou…

A complete Neolithic scraper made on a flake of mottled grey flint which is also partly comprised of a matt grey inclusion. The scraper is roughly triangular in shape and is gently domed in profile. The ventral surface is smooth with a distinctive, large flake scar (on the left hand side in the photo). The dorsal surface has 3 or 4 large flake scars and there are at least three areas of quite steep retouch on the edges. The flint is opaque. It is 31mm long, 27.5mm wide and 7mm thick. It weighs 7g.

This is a small secondary flake, possibly a flint scraper of Neolithic origin. The piece has a diffuse bulb of percussion to the ventral side and some very fine parallel direct re-touch to the rounded edge beneath the cortex. The dorsal side has remaining cortex with negative scars running off the single dorsal ridge. There are a number of conchoidal scars with re-working to the convex edge that cause the piece to resemble a denticulate side scraper. The piece has a mottled dark to light brown colour and a number of pale cream inclusions.

A flake of dark/light grey banded chert that has perhaps been fashioned into a lithic implement. The convex end has conchoidal re-touch scars to one side, giving this flake a probable use as a scraper. In date this artefact is possibly Mesolithic. Other implements made from this type of material have been found in north Wales and it is suggested that they are of Mesolithic date.

This is a most interesting find, an example of a possibly late Neolithic or early Bronze Age tool on a flake of chert, most probably a scraper. However, see below for more thoughts on the date. The tool is roughly triangular in shape, but with the corners of the triangle missing. It fits nicely in the hand ready for use. There is a probable bulb of percussion, along with a bulbar scar formed off the striking platform but these appear on what one would imagine to be one side of the flake rather than the base. The cutting/scraping edges are each different, one being slightly concave, th…

A rough flake of banded chert or flint of probable Neolithic origin. With no sign of a striking platform there is however, conchoidal scarring from re-touch along one edge and curving around part of one end (the left-hand edge in the right hand image in the photo). In the hand, this has the feel of a side scraper. The material is a banded pale cream/grey colour with some minor inclusion and ferrous staining.

This is a small flint blade or knife of the Neolithic period. Beneath the percussion platform, the ventral surface shows a diffuse bulb of percussion with the classic concentric pattern to the distal end. On the dorsal side, the cutting edge has been formed by the removal of at least two flakes, leaving a shallow angle to the 'front' part of the cutting edge and a steeper angle with near vertical striations running down it on the 'rear' part. Also on the dorsal surface is a central ridge and some proximal end scarring; to one side of the ridge, cortex runs the length of the blade. T…

Here we have an interesting small flint tool of probable Neolithic origin. Given the dimensions, it may be reasonable classed a blade, although both long edges show signs of re-touch. The dorsal surface is marked by small ridges from the distal end followed by a ‘Y’-shaped ridge running the remaining length. The proximal end terminates in what may be a ‘hinged fracture’. The material has a grey-brown colouration with darker inclusions.

This is most probably the remains of a thumbnail scraper from the Neolithic period. There is some remaining evidence of a platform at the proximal end. The dorsal surface carries several ridges and negative scars. The ventral surface shows limited evidence of a diffuse bulbar scar. One edge appears to have been re-touched but due to the poor quality of the flint this is not definite. The material is dark brown with small light grey inclusions throughout. There is one very small piece of surviving cortex.

This piece of flint material is a Neolithic flint flake. The ventral surface has radiating ripples and is heavily scarred by small secondary fractures. The dorsal surface has ridges and a central negative scar. There is an ‘edge’ but there are no signs of re-touching although it possibly displays evidence of polishing through use. The material is dark brown with a small lighter-coloured inclusion.

Here we have an interesting secondary flint flake in the form of a trapezoid, of probable Neolithic origin. The piece is very thin in section and may have re-touch on the long side. There are traces of cortex surviving and the ventral surface is smooth with a small bulb of percussion. The dorsal surface is marked by ridges and negative scarring. The material is a translucent dark brown with white patches which may be from their proximity to the partially removed cortex.

This is an attractive flint flake, probably from the Neolithic period. It has a worked and re-touched cutting or scraping edge. The dorsal surface has ridges and negative scarring, the ventral surface is smooth. Fissures are visible on both surfaces. The tool is of a dark translucent brown with an unusual striped margin, possibly surviving cortex, or a fragment of a fossil. This striped margin consists of alternate white and medium grey/brown banding, with the white bands being slightly wider than the darker bands.

This is a very nicely crafted, small lithic thumb nail scraper of probable Neolithic date. The flake is near circular in shape with a horseshoe working edge. The proximal end has no clear platform but there is a diffuse bulb of percussion to the ventral face with conchoidal ripples running down to the distal edge. The dorsal surface has a single ridge with a negative scar running diagonally across the back. The working edge has then been knapped and defined by approximately 20 pressure, or soft hammer flutes/channel flakes. That edge has then been further re-touched. It has a …
