Record ID: CAM-ECADA8
Object type: AXEHEAD
Broad period: MESOLITHIC
County: Norfolk
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
Probably an axehead, or possibly an adze, of Mesolithic date. This prehistoric tool has been knapped (struck) out of flint. Most of the artefact survives though there is some damage particularly at the cutting edge which removed some of the diagnostic area that might have helped determine more conclusively between axehead and adze. In its current condition the object weighs 167.98g. It has maximum dimensions of: length of 141.9mm, width 38.4mm and thickness 28.7mm. Mostly a medium to dark deep toffee colour with lesser patches of beige, pale brown/dark cream colour.

Object type: FLAKE
Broad period: NEOLITHIC
County: Cambridgeshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A Thinning flake from a larger bifacial tool, possibly from a hand axe. Mid - late Neolithic, c. 2.900 - 2.500 BC. Length: 45.50 mm, width: 33.16 mm, thickness: 8.16 mm, weight: 14.84 g. In mottled black flint with semi-polished surfaces. There is edge damage along both the distal end and left leading edge, probably a result of plough damage. There are flake scars over dorsal surface that are fairly large and irregular. Possibly re-used as a side scraper.

Object type: BARBED AND TANGED ARROWHEAD
Broad period: BRONZE AGE
County: Cambridgeshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A tertiary flint barbed and tanged arrowhead of middle Bronze Age date. The flint is pale grey in colour with a streak of mid to dark grey running vaguely diagonally across the artefact. Some impurities present. The artefact has a pointed-oval cross-section. The triangular shaped arrowhead is bifacially worked with covering parallel low angle retouch that has removed any trace of a bulb of percussion. The tip of the point and tips of the two two barbs are incomplete having been slightly damaged. The current weight is 2.2g, the slightly incomplete length is currently a maximum 28.2…

Object type: SCRAPER (TOOL)
Broad period: NEOLITHIC
County: Cambridgeshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A secondary flint scraper tool. Bulb and point of percussion present. Dark flint, impurities present. Mostly diffuse ripple marks, suggestive of soft hammer production, but some more strongly defined might possibly be result of later damage - also more strongly defined ripple marks on retouch. Retouch present on dorsal edge: short, probably scaled - possibly sub-parallel, abrupt. Finder's research = 'side scraper, Bronze Age'.

A secondary flint pebble core for producing small blades c.30.2mm x c.6.3mm. Single striking platform with blades removed only part the way round. Three definite adjacent parallel blades removed, possibly another one or two incomplete or damaged blade removal scars to the side. Diffuse ripple marks, suggestive of soft hammer production. No bulb or point of percussion visibly present. Some larger, scaled, ripple marks at right angles to blade removal, indicating removal of flint to the side - whether intentionally or through accidental damage is uncertain. Core has a…

Weight 12.65g, length 44.4mm, width 33.2mm, thickness 10.6mm. 2A - Larger secondary probable flint flake. Probable bulb, and point of percussion present. A primary flint core, Clark (1960) Type B1, having two parallel striking platforms, with flakes removed only part of the way around the core. One of the two striking platforms seems to have suffered later damage rather than having the appearance of an intentionally worked surface, direction of flaking indicates evidence of only c. 3 blades removed from that end. Some impurities present in the flint and this might explain some of the smaller blade shaped removals from the smoother platform used last in the core's function for providing blades. Some of the smallest removals…

Two flint blades. A secondary flint blade, probably utilised as a scraper. Bulb of percussion present on ventral face with diffuse ripple marks indicating soft hammer production. Subtle hinge fracture at distal end. Ventral face has two main facets where blades were previously removed but indication that at least a further two were removed from the first quarter at the proximal end above these which ended in one subtle and one possible hinge fracture. A secondary flint flake utilised as a scraper. Incomplete, due to later damage or reworking of the , bulb of percussion present. Transverse break (possibly hinge fracture) across distal end. Initial flake has very diffuse ripple marks on the ventral and dorsal faces indicating soft hammer production. Subsequent removal of flint on both faces all has more defined ripple marks. The recorder is uncertain whether these are defined enough to indicate hard hammer use or just that the soft hammer has had more impact than that initially used to produce the flake. Working on the vent…

Fissures more noticeable on dorsal face. Diffuse to more noticeable ripple marks probably indicating just soft hammer production (possibly some hard hammer use too - recorder uncertain). Probable retouch along one edge, extent of retouch short, type of retouch scaled, angle of retouch abrupt veering towards low-angle.

The removal of blades seems to be most likely, at least for that last utilage of this core. Diffuse ripple marks indicative of soft hammer production. While the direction of ripple marks indicates the direction of strike, as the core has been worked from a number of directions no flat platform remains. A tertiary flint pebble flake within which is a large impurity at the proximal end and seen in both ventral and dorsal faces. This is present in the bulb of percussion where it has a chert like texture. Consideration has been given to the suggestion that this might be a reworked adze. If not, and it seems more probable that, this is a core rejuvenation flake tool indicating two attempts to remove the larger impurity. Almost all surfaces over this piece of flint are re-patinated with the exception of a very small percentage of surface area where this has been removed by later …
