Object type: FLAKE
Broad period: NEOLITHIC
County: Oxfordshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
Two flint flakes of uncertain prehistoric date, but probably Neolithic to Bronze Age. The flakes both retain the striking platform as well as flake scars on the dorsal surface, but there is no retouching on either flake. The flint is a light, semi-translucent brown with mottled bluish-grey patina. One retains approximately 20% cortex. The flakes measure 36.79mm L x 22.2mm W x 3.14mm T and 3.6 grams, and 33.03mm L x 21.05mm W x 3.05mm T and 3 grams. Both display post-deposition damaging and weathering.

Object type: FLAKE
Broad period: NEOLITHIC
County: West Berkshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A flint flake of the prehistoric period. The flake retains a small amount of cortex on one distal side. The platform is present as is the bulb of percussion. Although there is some minimal retouching on one edge the majority appears to be damage rather than purposeful retouching. The dorsal surface of the flake has also suffered damage and some flake scars are evident at the proximal end. Probably Neolithic or early Bronze Age in date.

Broad period: NEOLITHIC
County: West Berkshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A complete flint arrowhead, a small oblique point, dating from the late Neolithic to early Bronze Age period (c. 2500-1500 BC). The arrowhead has been bifacially worked and is in good condition; there is invasive retouch on both the dorsal and ventral faces, and on all margins and at the distal and proximal ends. The base is hollow and has slight barbs on either side that would have been hafted on to the arrow shaft. The length to breadth ratio is about 3:2 which is common for this type of oblique arrowhead. Bond (2004) illustrates a similar example on page 53, Fig.5.12, No.L123, w…

Object type: BLADE
Broad period: NEOLITHIC
County: Oxfordshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A flint blade dating from the early Neolithic period (c.4000-3000 BC). The blade is made on a secondary flake of a dark grey, semi-translucent flint. The distal end retains approximately 20% brown-white cortex. The blade is retouched around all dorsal edges apart from at the distal end; thinning of the bulb is evident at the proximal end on the ventral side. The blade widens from 7.41mm at the proximal end to 23.34mm at the distal end and has a roughly trapezoidal cross section.

A patinated and iron stained flint blade, probably dating to the later stages of the Upper Palaeolithic (c. 40,000 BC - 8,300 BC). The blade has a plain platform from where it was struck from the core, and a diffuse bulb. The blade is slightly curved and retains some cortex on the distal end of the dorsal surface. Retouching is evident along both left and right dorsal edges, however there is also modern machine damage evident to both side and the central ridge is crushed. There is also some crushing to the right hand side of the tip. The Late or Final Upper Palaeolithic period dated f…

A lower palaeolithic handaxe, dating from c. 476,000 - 421,000 BC. The handaxe has been made of a flint nodule that has a greyish-white outer colouring, likely to be from a chalk downlands source. Dating from the Anglian phase of the Lower Palaeolithic, c. 478,000 to 423,000 years ago, the hand axe has bifacial removals made using a hard hammer, such as another stone. Although the hand axe has some post-depositional damage and iron staining, it survives in very good condition. Based on the location of discovery this hand axe probably derived from the Caversham Channel, an ancient rout…

A very large flint axe head, dating from the Neolithic period (4000-2100 BC). The axehead has been fashioned from a single flint nodule and retains cortex on both the dorsal and ventral surfaces as well as the proximal end. There are flaked removals over all surfaces and the distal end, or tip of the axe has been flaked clean of cortex. The tip and one edge of the axe bears evidence of rolling or bashing, probably due to post-depostional damage. Alison Roberts of the Ashmolean Museum has suggested that this may be an incomplete axehead, known as a 'roughout', and was lost or discarded…

Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
An un-retouched flint flake (debitage), struck from a core and showing previous flake scars on the dorsal surface. There is no evidence for retouching or further work on either edge and the bulb is retained. This may be a preparation or rejuvenation piece. Generally prehistoric in date (non-diagnostic), but more likely to be later Neolithic or Bronze Age in date (c. 3000-900 BC).

An unusually large and chunky Neolithic arrowhead dating from c. 4000 - 2100 BC. The arrowhead was the cause of consideration by Alison Roberts (Ashmolean Museum) and Prof. Nick Barton (Institute of Archaeology), and thanks are given for their comments, which follow: 'The flint appears at first to be of considerable age, however it is too small to be of Upper Palaeolithic origin, but is not quite right for the Neolithic period either. There are large laurel-leaf arrowheads of the Neolithic that have been found in East Anglia, so it is probably better to consider this as a Neolithic…

A Mesolithic flint scraper made of a tertiary flake of a mid-brown flint. The scraper has retouch around both dorsal laterals and nose. The ventral surface is un-worked but retains the bulb of percussion. Part of the platform is also retained. Due to it's size this type of artefact is known as a thumbnail scraper and is typologically characteristic of the Mesolithic to early Neolithic period, c.6500-2500 BC.
