Record ID: BERK-6D4C77
Object type: DEBITAGE
Broad period: NEOLITHIC
County: Oxfordshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A piece of flint debitage in the form of a blade of probable later Mesolithic to Neolithic date (c. 8000 - 3000 BC). The flake retains the bulb of percussion. The flake has suffered modern damage to its dorsal surface and edges; there may be some limited retouching along part of one lateral edge on the ventral side, however it is partly obscured by modern edge damage. The flint is a mottled grey to grey-brown in colour. Uncertain prehistoric date.

Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A piece of flint debitage in the form of a blade of probable Mesolithic to early Neolithic date (c. 8000 - 3500 BC). The flake retains c.5% cortex. The platform has been removed by modern damage however part of the bulb of percussion survives. At the distal end the flake has a hinge fracture. The dorsal surface has suffered modern damage leaving fake 'scars' on its surface. The flint is a mottled grey to grey-brown in colour. Uncertain prehistoric date.

Two unretouched flint blades (production debitage) of later prehistoric date, probably Mesolithic or Neolithic (c. 8000-3000 BC). Both blades retain their bulbs of percussion, platform and show radiating fracture lines. Several previous removals, suggestive of bladelet / microlith production (Mesolithic), are visible as flake scars. One piece of debitage retains 33% cortex, the other is a tertiary piece.

Object type: ARROWHEAD
Broad period: NEOLITHIC
County: Oxfordshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A complete Neolithic or early Bronze Age flint barbed and tanged arrow head dating to the period c2700 - 1600 BC. The arrowhead is sub-triangular in shape with convex sides. The tang is longer than the barbs which are both complete, but one is shorter than the other. It is made on a flake and extensively retouched. This retouch is invasive on both faces. The flint is light brown to yellow, and is opaque around the edges.

Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
An incomplete flint barbed and tanged arrowhead dating to the Early Bronze Age (c. 2150-1500 BC). The arrowhead is roughly triangular in form and has extensive soft-hammer flake removals on all surfaces. A small patch of cortex remains on one of the surfaces (covering c. 20%) however the rest of the arrowhead has tertiary removals. The very tip of the arrowhead, and a small section of one of the barbs, is now broken and missing.

A lithic object that appears at firast glance to be a tanged and barbed arrowhead of Late Neolithic / Early Bronze Age date (c. 2500-1800 BC), however on closer inspection this appears to be a flake, of probable Brone Age date, however without the attributes of a retouched arrowhead; either this is a beginnings of an arrowhead lost or discarded before completion or it is just a flake that resembles an arrowhead in plan.

A flint leaf-shaped arrowhead dating to the early Neolithic period. The arrowhead is formed from a piece of mottled blue/ grey flint which has a heavily calcified outer surface, suggesting a chalk downland source. The arrowhead has been extensively retouched on both ventral and dorsal face, with some post-depositional damage evident. At the proximal end of the arrowhead there is the impression of notching on either edge, which may indicate the beginnings of the creation of a tang, however the surfaces in this area are not consistent with the rest of the arrowhead and these notches are…

An incomplete flint barbed and tanged arrowhead dating to the early Bronze Age (c. 2150-1500 BC). The arrowhead has been formed on a piece of light pink / buff flint (heavily calcified) suggesting a chalk downland source. The arrowhead is roughly triangular in form although the point is missing and there is damage to one side. The tangs are very short (undeveloped) and uneven. The arrowhead has extensive bifacial flake removals on all surfaces.

A modestly retouched flint flake of general prehistoric date, but probably Neolithic or Bronze Age in date (c. 4000-1400 BC). Plano-convex in form, the dorsal surface has a single ridge running from just behind the distal point to the proximal end. The ventral surface is smooth apart from a modest percussion wave and some slight flaking. There are signs of retouch to both the left and right hand distal edges. This implement is modestly worked, sufficient to make it practically useful. The surface is a mottled grey with inclusions and ferrous like staining, some of the crazing/chips…

A irregular and weather damaged flint waste flake (debitage) of general prehistoric date. The flake retains c. 30% cortex on the dorsal side and is this whole surface has been damaged through frost action (probably). The tool is formed on a blade-like secondary flake of mottled light and dark grey flint and retains c.5% cortex around the platform on the proximal dorsal end. Flake scars on the dorsal surface show previous removals. The platform and bulb is retained; the distal end of the tool appears broken and there has been some attempt at reworking the broken distal end. A flint nose scraper on a plunging blade from a double platformed core, therefore of Mesolithic or Neolithic date (c. 8000-2400 BC). The object is formed on a tertiary flake of a mottled grey flint. There are three, if not more, two-directional removals visible on the dorsal surface; although neither platform survives, this is indicitive of a double platformed core. The thinner distal end has some fine soft hammer retouch on its tip which has lead to its identification as a nose scraper, however this may also have been the result of removal or preperation of the platform. This is prob…

Object type: AXE
Broad period: NEOLITHIC
County: West Berkshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A damaged and incomplete stone axe of Neolithic date, probably a Group VI Langdale axe. The stone axe has been polished and is grey-green in colour. The axe is made from a fine-grained siliceous tuff, a sedimentary volcanic rock which was orignally deposited in water and is likely to be from the Great Langdale quarries in Cumbria. The axe is damaged, missing most of one side and some of the blade edge on both surfaces. The break may have occured during use, as it appears to originate from the blade end (Alison Roberts pers. comm). c. 4000-2351 BC.

A secondary flint flake, debris from flint working (debitage). The flake is broadly triangular in plan and retains the platform and bulb of percussion. Previous removals are evident on its dorsal surface. A small area of cortex (c.5%) is retained on the distal end. The flint is mottled grey in colour. Due to being generally undiagnostic dating can only be prehistoric, generally Mesolithic to Early Bronze Age in date although more likely to be of later Mesolithic to Neolithic in date (c. 6000-2300 BC).
