Object type: LITHIC IMPLEMENT
Broad period: BRONZE AGE
County: Northamptonshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
A flint scraper made on a natural flake, dating to the later prehistoric period, probably the Bronze Age or later. The scraper has been made on an oval flake of grey-white flint with a brown, iron-stained outer cortex. A spool has popped of from the dorsal surface. These are naturally occuring breaks and can occur because of fragilities in the flint; extreme temperature changes can cause spooling (for example if water infiltrates the rock then swells due to freezing) as can pressure. Minimal retouching around one half of the dorsal lateral suggests this tool was used as a scraper. Int…

A Late Neolithic - Early Bronze Age flint scraper, made on a large secondary flake. The proximal emd of the scraper is pointed, possibly to enable the tool to be hafted into a wooden or bone handle for ease of use. This flint scraper dates from about 2500 - 2000 BC, and measures 56.39mm in length, 24.66mm in width and is 7.86mm thick. It weighs 11.6gms.

A large snub-nosed borer made from a flint with a dark grey core and dark brownish orange outer. No cortex remains. The bulb has been removed, while retouch is evident around all edges. There are also removals on the 'nose' end of the borer tip. This tool may have been hafted into a wooden or bone handle and used either by hand or with a bow-drill.
This object is hard to date, but is probably Mesolithic to Neolithic in date. The tool measures 38.47mm long and weighs 9.2gms. The width of the tool is 25.53mm at the shoulders, reduced to 9.51mm at the bore tip.

A tabular scraper with retouch only evident on the distal surface. The flint orange-brown in colour and retains cortex on the distal surface, although there is no patina. This is an unusual flint as there is a ?natural hole through the centre of the scraper which appears to pre-date the retouching – this hole has re-cortified, and with the tabular retouching the artefact at first looks like a spindle whorl. It is unknown whether the presence of the hole was ever utilised for hanging or securing the scraper by rope or string. The scraper is 35.53mm in diameter and 10.58mm thick and we…

Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
A Neolithic (3,500-2,100BC) flint scraper. The tool has been made from a primary flint flake with approximately 80% cortex remaining. The ventral surface has a single flake removal. A small amount of cortex has been removed from the dorsal surface through several small flake removals, and then edge pressure flaked to form the scraper. The retouch has been unifacially worked and extends around the tip and the left edge that has been exposed from the cortex.

Object type: SICKLE
Broad period: NEOLITHIC
County: Northamptonshire
Workflow stage: Published
A late Neolithic – early Bronze Age (2,100-1,500 BC) single piece flint sickle. The sickle is crescentic in outline with invasive flaking and a medial ridge on each side and it has been bifacially worked. It is formed from black, glassy flint with a number of large inclusions. A small amount of cortex (approximately 5%) remains on the inner edge at one end. The end with the cortex also has less invasive flaking suggesting this section formed the tang for hafting. Polish is visible along the outer edge for approximately 49mm from the tip.
It is similar to a sickle found at Milde…
