Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
Rounded flint scraper with a probable hinge fracture. There is no sign of a bulb on the ventral face suggesting a hing fracture rather than a platform. The distal end is rounded and worked at a shallow angle, about 45 dregrees or shallower in places around the entire end. There is a small amount of cortext remaining on the dorsal face. The flint is dark brown all over with light brown cortex. Length: 50.9mm, Width: 36.1mm, Thickness: 14mm, Weight: 25g

Object type: ARROWHEAD
Broad period: NEOLITHIC
County: Buckinghamshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A complete flint expedient transverse arrowhead dating to the Late Neolithic period, c. 2700-2350 BC. The flint is roughly worked with minimal removals and basically no retouch along the lateral edges, however there is retouch at the tip of the point. The arrowhead has suffered from post-depositional damage, probably as a result of modern agricultural activity.

Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A irregular and weather damaged flint waste flake (debitage) of general prehistoric date. The flake retains c. 30% cortex on the dorsal side and is this whole surface has been damaged through frost action (probably). The bulb and platform is retained on this mottled milky-grey flint, but there is not retouch. Probably later Neolithic or Bronze Age in date (c. 2300-1800 BC).

Broad period: MESOLITHIC
County: Buckinghamshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A complete but slightly damaged struck flint, a possible microdenticulate or a multi-tool of probable Mesolithic date (c. 10,000-4000 BC). The tool is formed on a blade-like secondary flake of mottled light and dark grey flint and retains c.5% cortex around the platform on the proximal dorsal end. Flake scars on the dorsal surface show previous removals. The platform and bulb is retained; the distal end of the tool appears broken and there has been some attempt at reworking the broken distal end. The dorsal surface bares abrupt retouch (backing?) along c.70% of the left lateral, fadin…

Object type: SCRAPER (TOOL)
Broad period: NEOLITHIC
County: Buckinghamshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A flint scraper dating to the Neolithic period, c. 4000-2350 BC. The scraper has been made on a flake and could be described as a 'thumbnail' scraper due to its size. There is no bulb or platform retained. Invasive soft-hammer retouch is visible around both laterals and the distal end, however there is none on the proximal end. All retouching is limited to the dorsal surface. The scraper has been burnt, after it was formed. There are two 'pot-lids', or spools that fracture and pop off under extreme conditons, such as heating or freezing. These pot lids break through the patina of the …

Object type: RETOUCHED FLAKE
Broad period: MESOLITHIC
County: Buckinghamshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A retouched flint flake on a secondary blade-like flake. The flint is dark brown and semi-translucent with approximately 40% cortex remaining on its dorsal surface. The bulb and platform appear to be missing due to a break at the proximal end however lines of percussion remain. The soft-hammer retouch is restricted to a 17mm length along the left dorsal lateral. It is fine and well executed. This informal tool likely dates from the late Mesolithic to Neolithic period, c. 6500-2100 BC.

Object type: GUNFLINT
Broad period: POST MEDIEVAL
County: Buckinghamshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A wedge-shaped gunflint of the 17th century AD. The gunflint is made on a piece of mottled brownish-grey flint, with direct percussion retouching around the dorsal surface end and the two laterals; on the thin end of the wedge the retouch is limited to the ventral side. These wedge-shaped gunflints or gunspalls have been found on colonial sites in America and would have been used with flintlock muskets. Mention of the objects are recorded in returning shipments and post-date c. AD 1650 (Courtney 1998, after Kent 1983).

A flint waste blade ('debitage') on a tertiary flake of probably late Neolithic or Early Bronze Age date, c. 2500-1600 BC. Grey-brown flint with a broadly triangular profile. The flint has a couple of possible removals on its dorsal surface and some restricted, steep and short retouch on part of one lateral, however this may be plough and ploughzone damage. This was found near a thumbnail scraper BERK-6F6C98.

Broad period: BRONZE AGE
County: Buckinghamshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A small scraper, often called a thumbnail scraper, dating to the Early Bronze Age period. The scraper is made on a dark grey flint, retaining the platform and the bulb of percussion. There is (probably modern) damage on the ventral side, while the dorsal surface has scaled retouch and modern damage to 90% of its edges. Thumbnail scrapers are thought to date to the Early Bronze Age or Beaker Period, c. 2350 - 1601 BC.

A broken flint flake in a semi-translucent brown flint. The flake is broadly rectangular in plan with quite straight edges; one edge appears to be broken so this may be part of a larger object such as a blade, or indeed a larger flake. There is no retouch visible. The remains of a hinge fracture can be seen on the ventral surface. General prehistoric date but probably late Mesolithic or Neolithic in origin.

A piece of probable flint debitage in a semi-translucent light brown flint. The flake is broadly triangular in plan with uneven removals and scars over its dorsal surface. There is edge damage and no retouch is apparent. This is probably a piece of debitage or a surface preperation piece. General prehistoric date but probably more late Mesolithic or Neolithic in origin.

A complete pointed handaxe dating from the Lower Palaeolithic period (c, 500,000-40,000 BC). The handaxe is in good condition and appears to have been 'rolled', a reflection of its age and suggesting it has been in a high energy environment (such as a river) before its final deposition. The flint appears to be Chiltern flint, now being a reddish-orange in colour. Recortication is evident on the dorsal surface.

The axehead has a curving cutting edge (width: 63.22mm), finely tapering edges to a tapering butt (width: 33.87mm). The cutting edge has no signs of wear; there are a few notches due to more modern damage. There is also damage to the dorsal and ventral surfaces and butt. The surface has also patches of pink/purple ?algae present. Orange to grey patina on the flint with darker patches on one side ?due to exposure. Examples of similar axeheads have been found in…
