A Mesolithic-Neolithic backed blade. Formed on a broadly triangular cross section flake, the material is dark grey with spots of light patination. The ventral face has a shallow bulb of percussion. Half of the ventral surface has the characteristic ripples running down the full length of the blade. The dorsal face has a pair of converging flat ridges that combine into a single flat ridge running to the distal end. The concave upper edge of the blade has abrupt retouch, producing a crushed like edge, perhaps for comfort in use. The convex cutting edge has Semi-…

Object type: AXEHEAD
Broad period: NEOLITHIC
County: West Berkshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A complete Neolithic flaked and polished flint axe, 96.1mm in length and dating to c.4000-2350 BC. The axehead is made from a light grey to light brown flint and has hard-hammer working across its surfaces. The side profile is lenticular and the axehead flares slightly to a rounded cutting edge. This edge has evidence of polishing. There appears to be damage to one face of the blade, which has lost a large flake with a hinge fracture; this may represent damage from use.

A lithic scraper, probably Late Neolithic to Early Bronze age c. BC 3300 - 2000. The bulbar end exhibits a clear bulb of percussion with light radiating ripple marks extending partway down the partly incurvate ventral surface. The dorsal surface has a small section of the cortex in situ and the surface is heavily faceted with random flaking. The edge has bifacial fine and coarse retouch and probable further damage/fritting from its time in the ground. The material is a mottled grey/cream flint with small white inclusions with further iron oxide elements. The small black surface markin…

A late Neolithic to early Bronze Age backed blade or knife c. 2500 - 2000 BC. Formed on a broadly triangular cross section tertiary flake, the material is a pale brown/grey chert with large inclusions of a pale cream material. The ventral face has a modest bulb of percussion, much remove by a large bulbar scar. The remainder of the ventral surface has the characteristic ripples running down the full length of the blade. Object type: PICK
Broad period: NEOLITHIC
County: West Berkshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A complete worked flint pick of Neolithic date. The pick has been formed on a nodule of mottled grey/white flint with iron staining evident of the crests of the removals. The flint has been bifacially worked and a removal across the butt does look tranchet-like but on closer inspection this has been ruled out. The tip of the pick is has a large ridge behind it with multi-directional removals on the side of the tip. Suggested date Neolithic 4000-2000 BC.

A straight backed piece of final upper palaeolithic or early mesolithic date, c. 40,000-6,000 BC. This object is part of a larger assemblage of blade and bladelet flakes and debitage microliths and some retouched pieces (see OXON-AB9254) found in the back garden of a house in Newbury during gardening activities. The straight-backed point is made on a secondary flake of a semi-translucent light brown flint. The point has concaved basal retouch, some very fine retouch on the right lateral edge and covering retouch along the straight back. The piece is in very good condition with no appa…

Object type: ARROWHEAD
Broad period: NEOLITHIC
County: West Berkshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A Late Neolithic flint Plano-convex oblique arrowhead, probably dating to c. 2700 - 2400 BC. Worked from a tertiary flake of opaque white/cream flint. The arrowhead is broadly triangular in plan with straight edges and a concave basal edge that has been thinned to accommodate hafting of the item. There is clear edge retouch to the dorsal side with some evidence of further modest retouch to the ventral surface, although damage due to erosion in situ is also a likely cause. The arrowhead has a pale cream/grey appearance with numerous natural inclusions.

A collection of eight later prehistoric blades and bladelet flakes, probably dating from c. 7000 - 2400 BC (Mesolithic to Neolithic). The blades have all been made on a mottled grey flint; seven are tertiary flakes while on is secondary with a very small area of retouch on the distal tip. None of the blades are retouched. A small flint bladelet of later prehistoric date, probably dating from c. 7000 - 3000 BC (Mesolithic/Neolithic). The flake is made from a light grey flint which has small areas of iron staning on the dorsal surface. The flake is incomplete and is missing the proximal end with the platform and bulb. Lines of percussion are visible on the ventral surface. There is some crude, hasty retouch on the left dosal edge. This flake forms part of an assemblage of flint artefacts of later prehistoric date.

Two possible core rejuvenation flakes of later prehistoric date, probably dating from c. 4000 - 1400 BC (Neolithic / Bronze Age). The flakes have suffered much modern damage (possibly from agricultural activity or gravel extraction). The larger flake is made from a orangey-brown flint (suggesting a valley source?) while the other is a mottled, mostly white flint (probably grey internally, some recalcification may have taken place), possibly from an upland source. Both flakes retain their platforms and the bulb of percussion. There si no retouch. These flakes forms part of an a…

Object type: DEBITAGE
Broad period: NEOLITHIC
County: West Berkshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A later prehistoric flake, probably dating from c. 4000 - 2200 BC (Neolithic period). The form of the flake is similar to later Neolithic fabricators however the retouch is quite fresh and cuts through the surface patina on both dorsal and ventral surfaces (Alison Roberts Ashmolean Museum, pers. comm). This suggests a more modern date for the retouch. The flake has been made on a mottled mid grey flint with approximately 25% cortext remaining on the dorsal surface. This flake forms part of an assemblage of flint artefacts of later prehistoric date.

A collection of six later prehistoric flakes, probably dating from c. 7000 - 1400 BC (Mesolithic to Middle Bronze Age). The flakes are all water worn and all but two have areas of cortex remaining (between 10-50%). The flakes have all been made on a mottled mid grey flint. A later prehistoric bladelet core, dating from c. 7000 - 2400 BC (Mesolithic / Neolithic). The core has been made on a mottled light grey flint with a deep seam of cortex covering approximately 40% of the whole. There are several small blade removals and other removal scars as well as more modern damage. This core forms part of an assemblage of flint artefacts of later prehistoric date. Although bladelets are generally assumed to be of Mesolthic date, this core is not definingly of that date and may be later.

A lithic, secondary sub-triangular flake with retouch to both long edges. The dorsal surface has numerous negative scars/arrises running roughly from the proximal to distal end. The ventral surface is smooth but for some fracture scars at the distal point that looks to have been broken away in antiquity. This implement may be considered as a scraper but, whilst the proximal end does have some evidence of basal thinning, it does not in itself look sufficient to have made hafting an easy task. Alternatively it may have been intended to be a trnasverse arrowhead. Dating is difficult; Neo…

Object type: AXE
Broad period: NEOLITHIC
County: West Berkshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A damaged and incomplete stone axe of Neolithic date, probably a Group VI Langdale axe. The stone axe has been polished and is grey-green in colour. The axe is made from a fine-grained siliceous tuff, a sedimentary volcanic rock which was orignally deposited in water and is likely to be from the Great Langdale quarries in Cumbria. The axe is damaged, missing most of one side and some of the blade edge on both surfaces. The break may have occured during use, as it appears to originate from the blade end (Alison Roberts pers. comm). c. 4000-2351 BC.
