Stone possible line weight. Pale fine-grained Sandstone. A small lightly concavo convex sub-rectangular stone chip with a hole of diameter 2mm drilled through its top [as presented here]. The drilling of this unpromising material was as skilful as the final result now appears unappealing, so some further surface may have been lost. This object might have been used as an improvised line weight though, with a lesser density than lead, a small stone chip would lose the mass of the water it displaced when submerged, and would be inherently less satisfactory. Suggested date: possibly Mediev…

Irregular sectioned piece of flint, mid grey, translucent, with a light, white patination. Flint probably a natural chunk but with two, concave areas of its edge bearing traces of percussive damage suggesting that it has been used, in conjunction with a fire steel, to strike a spark for fire making. The concave areas may have been deliberately formed. The flint bears some traces of iron staining which would be in keeping with this function. While this object is difficult to date the battered area is patinated suggesting that it is not recent. Length 58.7mm, Width 33.8mm, Thickness 19.…

TREASURE CASE 2017 T515 Description: A complete but distorted silver finger ring of medieval date. The finger ring has a flat profile with a rectangular bezel slightly wider than the main band, but also flat in section and plan. The bezel is decorated with incised 'rocker-arm' patterns comprising a zig-zag between a straight border on the bezel and abstract lozenge and linear designs on each shoulder. The designs on the shoulders is reminiscent of the Christian fish symbol, with a line through the head however this may just be coincidence. The remainder of the band is undecorated both …

Schist possible hone fragment. An irregular fragment from a mullion of possibly Norwegian schist. One broad side may be flattened and grooved, and the opposite side appears dished. This stone was the predominant material used for whetstones in medieval England. Earlier examples were imported as finished or nearly finished items, but later material includes fragments of rock broken along its bedding planes with finishing left to the purchaser; in this form perhaps arriving as a ballast cargo for vessels engaged in the Northern trade. An origin from glacial drift is also possible as thi…

A knapped flint building stone made from a nodule of dark grey brown flint full of diffuse light grey inclusions. It has the appearance of a prehistoric flake core in that it has flakes struck from the 3 platforms to make a square section. One end has been removed and the remains of a pair of hard hammer bulbs of percussion are visible on the break. The remaining bulbs of percussion on the other edges appear to also be from a hard hammer and where they are obscurred is by harsh abrasion damage. One long side and the opposite end carries some cortex and some mottled blue/cream patinati…

Schist, possibly Norwegian Possible Hone fragment. Small fragment from a mullion of schist. The angled end and part of one side appear smoothed; other surfaces are probably broken. If the identification is sustained, this could be a small piece of a medieval whetstone; the English market for hones was dominated by Norwegian schists through the Medieval period. In the later medieval period, it is possible that undressed mullions of schist were imported to be either shaped or worn to shape by the purchaser. Suggested date: Possibly Medieval, 1300-1500.
