An incomplete post-Medieval decorated silver disc probably associated with a huntsman's whip (c. 1800-c. 1900). The object is probably the end cap from the handle of a whip. This damaged flat disc is decorated at the front and has an imprint of the design on the rear face. At the front it has raised capital letters forming a circular border and reads: (cinquefoil) BUNYAN (cinquefoil) WHIPMAKER (cinquefoil) HOLBOURN At the centre there is a dog or hound with a long pointed nose and ears sitting right. However, most is missing due to damage in the form of a sub-circular hole…

Cast lead-alloy weight, probably a spindle whorl dating from the medieval period, i.e. c. 1200-1500. The spindle whorl is biconical in shape with a circular hole in the centre and tapering sides. It was made from a lead-alloy and probably had moulded decoration on the obverse and reverse. However, both faces of the whorl are very worn; it is difficult to assess the decoration. It may have been writing, but it is much more likely that it was a decoration composed of lines, zig-zags and possibly dots. In the "Finds Recording Guide", Geake (2001, 66) points out that: "The function of l…

Copper alloy market trader's weight used during the reign of Henry VIII (1509-1547), with a crowned incuse 'h' stamped into the obverse. The reverse is plain. The weight is 4.13 g which is equivalent to about 63 grains, and could have been used to check the weight of the half noble, which weighed about 60 grains at the time. Withers (1995) illustrates the stamp on page 37 and refers to these weights as traders' weights and not coin weights, but that they could also have been used to check half nobles.

Late Anglo-Saxon/Scandinavian weight made from copper alloy, possibly with an iron core. The weight is roughly globular, with two flattened facets. Both flattened faces are decorated with the same motif. The motif has an incised circle containing an off-centred crescent. Around the external perimeter of the circle are punched crescents. The metal is a dark reddish-brown colour. This type of 'truncated sphere' weight is one of the more common Viking-age weights, being found in numbers in London, York and Scandianavia. It is thought that they are ultimately derived from Arab…

A cast lead or lead alloy weight of unknown date possibly Roman (100-400 AD) although more likely to be of medieval date (1300 - 1550). The weight is irregular being broadly sub-oval in plan and D shaped in cross section, with one flat face and one curved or domed face. Through the upper edge a circular projection has been cut, clear knife marks can be seen within the conical hole suggesting that the weight has either been augmented or was originally crude. The hole is stained with an orange iron corrosion suggesting that an iron wire may have been used to suspend. The flat face has a…

Cast copper alloy trade weight, circular in plan and flat in section, probably for four ounces, though it is slightly less in weight, but worn. There are two sets of turned concentric rings on the upper face of the weight. The outer pair are 3 mm apart and the inner pair are 2 mm apart. There are also four small holes which have been caused by air bubbles during a poor casting. The back or base of the weight has a slightly dipped middle section and a slightly raised central boss. Probably early 16th century, though in the absence of obvious stamps this cannot be absolutely certain (…

Conical lead weight, probably from a steelyard. The base is flat and circular, 32 mm in diameter, and has been slightly torn, probably by agricultural machinery. The weight tapers neatly to a point 25.5 mm above the base. At the apex are the stubs of two iron wires which represent the remains of a loop. Weights of this type, but biconical, are Roman in date, and were suspended from steelyards. It seems likely that similar weights of other shapes are also Roman. It weighs 99g.
