White metal ingot. A cast oval fragment of dense bright white metal which has been tightly rolled, hammered to round-ended cylindrical form and subsequently indented. Similar objects have been submitted to the Treasure process in the past as potential silver ingots, though they have frequently been considered of recent date by early medieval period specialists based at the British Museum, either with or without the identification of the material by laboratory investigation. The mass of the object does not coincide closely with that of a series of weights – derived from the Scandi…

White metal possible coin. A flat flan bearing faint trace of a bust right, otherwise featureless. Possibly clipped with the removal of legends; edges appear neatly cut. The overall impression is that this may not actually be a coin. It is possible this object may relate to a rash of forgeries reported from various sites detected by this club over the years, though those forgeries are usually of different style and construction, and are thought to come from a 'mint' in the Grimsby area. Obverse description: possibly bust right. All other detail lost. Suggested date: Unknown, Roman …

White metal possible ingot. Cast oval fragment of a dense dark grey metal. There are three aligned angled slashes on one side, and multiple annular stamps of diameter 4mm (at least two) and of diameter 2mm (at least three) on the other side. The Viking Age predilection for annular or ring-and-dot decoration - as for example, on racket headed pins of the 9th century (cf D. Haldenby, various dates, re Cottam, East Riding of Yorkshire) - might suggest a broad affinity, or perhaps a function as a casual trial piece. The object might also relate to a class of dark pellet-like ingots interm…

A coin issued by the British West Africa states. The coin - possibly a penny - has a hole in the centre, and is of a type that circulated in the British colonies of Gambia, Sierra Leone, Nigeria, and the Gold Coast (Ghana). The coin appears to be made of alluminium - one of several mediums in which such coins were struck. The obverse depicts a six-sided star or hexagram, around which is the legend BRITISH WEST AFRICA 1940. The reverse has been filed clean apart from the Crown, but would have contained the legend EDWARDVS VIII REX ET IND: IMP:, surrounding the legend ONE TENTH OF A PEN…

Modern pierced white metal commemorative medallion. The borough of Colne had this medallion struck in celebration of the anticipated coronation of Edward VII on 26 June 1902. The coronation of Edward VII and his wife Alexandra, actually took place at Westminster Abbey on 9 August 1902. It had been postponed at the last minute because the King had been taken ill and required immediate surgery to drain an abdominal cyst. The obverse consists of double profile bust of the king and queen & is inscribed EDWARD VII QUEEN ALEXANDRA. The portraits are not of the first order. The reverse shows…

Silver coin. Possibly a porcupine sceat of Series E, possibly a half unit (cf. E151). On the obverse detail of the 'quills', which entirely lack the pelleted ends where they spring from the curving 'body', is unusual. On the reverse, the standard motif lacks a range of additional features, and is again a shorthand version of the reverse of larger coins. Obverse description: Eight long quills arising from a crescent; two bars within its curve. Reverse description: Rectangular standard with central annulet and outer border of pellets. A probable modern fake of a penny of Edward the Confessor, Winchester mint. The coin appears to be imitating a hammer cross type (AD 1059-1062) although there is no annulet in the quarters of the cross as is usual for this series. The obverse inscription reads 'EADHARRD REX', crowned bust with sceptre right. The reverse reads 'ELFPINNE ON PINC'. The coin is of a very tinny white metal, and is of the correct weight and diameter however there is little wear and no tarnishing and the metal does not look or feel right for silver of this period.
