A fragment of a cast copper alloy vessel of medieval to post-medieval date, circa 1200 - 1700. The fragment is part of the rim of a probable cooking vessel and is triangular in plan and rectangular in section swelling slightly to the rim. All the breaks are old and worn and the fragment appears undecorated. The metal has a mid brownish-green patina and is worn. The fragment is 32.2mm long, 25.6mm wide, 4.5mm thick and weighs 13.8g. Crude cast copper alloy vessels for cooking and serving were widely used during the period AD 1200 - 1700 and were increasingly common during the 13th an…

An incomplete copper alloy pot leg of Medieval to Post-medieval date (AD 1300-1700). The object is a fragment from a cooking vessel such as a skillet or cauldron. The pot leg is sub rectangular in plan and D-shaped in cross section. The base of the pot leg imitates a hoof or a paw with 3 curving longitudinal grooves creating the 'toes'. A comparable potleg is recorded in the Finds Research Group Datasheet 41, Fig 4a.

A copper-alloy repair patch or folded 'paperclip' rivet probably from a post-medieval vessel. It has an uneven rectangular outline, folded down from a lozenge-shaped copper sheet which leaving a raised lozenge shape on the folded side. This type of repair was used to fill small splits in copper alloy vessels, secured by the two triangular tabs. Egan (2005, 101) mentions a broad date range for this type of pot mend, dating from the Early Medieval to Post Medieval periods but also suggests that a central period for the use of this type of rivet as dating from about the late 15th to late…

Incomplete medieval to post medieval foot from a cooking vessel such as a cauldron dating to the period c. AD 1200 - 1700. The foot is trapezoidal in cross-section with a central mid-rib and terminates in an old break above and below. It exhibits heavy traces of sooting. The vessels to which these were attached were usually of a tripod form and were widely used from circa AD 1200-1700 for serving and cooking. Butler and Green (2003) 15, state 'there is evidence that (cast copper alloy) metal cooking vessels became increasingly common during the 13th and 14th centuries'. While certa…

A probable Roman copper alloy vessel leg or fitting. The object has a flat backplate that is almost entirely missing its perimeter, and is now roughly rectangular in plan. In section it is slightly convex. The backplate is worn but the remains of two incised concentric circles can be seen at the upper break. A raised triangular 'leg' of triangular section extends from the centre. The upper two faces of the leg is decorated with incised chevrons. It appears as if the top of the fitting has been repaired; the top of the 'leg' appears to have been chisled out, and into the flattened area…

A cast copper alloy post medieval pot leg dating to c. 1500-1750. The object is D-shaped in cross section and broadly rectilinear in form, tapering to a blunt rectangular edge. There is an old break at the point where the leg would have once joined the body of the vessel. There are a series of five ribs, which while subtle are nonetheless clearly present, which run down the length of the leg. This example is representative of Butler et al (2009, 4)'s Type C, which they consider as in use by the 16th century and "almost universal" by the 17th century. Measurements: 46.8mm le…

Possible Iron Age or Roman (c. 100 BC to AD c. 400) unidentifiable copper alloy artefact: The fragment has a curvature which may be similar to a hemisphere which has along the long edge two patches of patina over the edge which is perhaps the rim which is undecorated. The opposite edge has a trace of a patina which covers the edge and is shaped at c. 110° which may suggest it is a trace of the base of a vessel. Otherwise all the edges of the fragment are broken, but not recently. The exterior surface has a circular cell, with a cirved profile, and at the centre the trace of a short, …
