A complete Medeival to Post Medieval right side iron ox shoe, one of a pair, the other missing, dating to c AD 1250 - 1900.  Unlike horses, oxen have cloven or bifurcated hooves so when working, their shoes had to be made in two pieces. It is a 'comma' shape, rectangular in section. Ox shoes commonly had four piercings for attachment along the outer edge, but this one apparently has only three. One can be seen and is oval in shape, the other two retain their nails, with oval heads and rectangular section spikes. The shoe is heavily rusted but retains its shape, b…

A Post-Medieval wrought iron horseshoe. The show is nearly complete although it is highly corroded. It is in the archetypal key show shape having a distinctly arched inner profile, and a rectangular cross section/ There is no evidence for calkins (suggesting a later Medieval date onwards) and the upper edge of the tow is bent upwards in a clip (suggesting a Post-Medieval date). One arm of the horsehose is far narrower than the other. It is possible to identify three rectangular nails holes, with the remains of corroded rectangular headed nails within on each side. A complete iron horse shoe of late medieval to early post-medieval date (c. 1350 - c. 1700) The shoe has a broad web (46 mm at the toe, 33 mm at the heel) and is 130 mm wide. In overall shape, it matches the late medieval form described by Clark (1986, p. 3, fig. 8). Four nails are in situ in sequence on the branch of the shoe (possibly more are present on the quarter but due to corrosion of the plate surface they are not distinct). There is a calkin on the right heel, none seems to be present on the left. Assuming the calkin to protrude down towards the road surface, the whole plate …

An iron bevelled horseshoe, probably of late medieval date (c AD 1450 - 1550). The object is a rounded U-shape in plan with a more purely U shape inner profile and is apparently complete. It has a broad web (47.63mm), tapering along the quarter of each branch towards the heel (27.79mm). The number and location of nail holes cannot be determined due to corrosion. It is also difficult to distinguish caulkins on the heels but it is likely it has 'upset' or thickened caulkins as there is a thickening of the metal here (13.25mm).There is some wear to the toe of the shoe.
