Circular tin alloy (pewter) mount or ferrule consisting of a rectangular strip soldered into a ring, decorated on the outer face with a line of lozenges or diamond shapes forming a band between parallel raised borders around the circumference of the ring. The decoration has been formed by pressing the strip against a pattern while rolling it through a mill. The ring is flat in section and is likely a mount from a utensil of some kind, for example, covering the junction between a handle and a knife blade. The style and manufacture suggests a Post-medieval date. A similar mount can b…

Copper 24 deniers or double sols of Louis XV (1715-1774) of France referred to as a French colonial 'stampee', used in the West Indies, with a large crowned 'C' stamped on the obverse, but a blank reverse. The first coinage of stampees used worn, old coins. This second major coinage employed newly minted planchets, thus the coin is not a 'reformation' nor a traditional counterstamp. In 1763 the first stampee, or sol tampé, of 24 deniers was authorized. This was a small copper disk stamped on the obverse with a crowned C (for Colonies) and a blank reverse. From dates on the undertypes…

Brass finger ring, biconical in profile, with two lines of horizontal raised lettering on the exterior of the hoop, between two borders of raised pellets within a recessed band that is 1 mm in from the edge. The lettering has been created by rolling a strip of sheet brass on to an engraved roller which would also form the pelleted borders. There is evidence of silver solder on the inside of the hoop which would have been used for a brass strip to hold it together. Gothic black letter script in two lines in French in opposition to each other or inverted: si nous tais tes saquerre…

Post Medieval silver French dixième d'écu dit "aux branches d'olivier" (10 centime piece with olive branches) of Louis XV (1710-1774) dated to 1750 on the reverse. Fractions of the silver ecu were introduced in 1726. The reverse has an oval shield enclosing three fleurs de lys surmounted by a crown and framed by two olive branches. Although the coin is rubbed almost flat, it must have been milled and not hammered, as hammered coins ceased to be produced in France after 1645. The obverse is completely worn away, but a coin with the same reverse (SUSS-862DA2) is illustrated on the dat…
