Large hone stone. Roughly rectangular in section, with evidence of heavy or long-term use. Material is a fine-grained micaceous garnet schist (almost certainly from the same imported source as other local Honestones in the Yorkshire Museum collection) suggesting a late Anglo-Scandinavian date. The heavy wear may suggest prolonged use into the medieval period.

Polished or ground stone axehead fashioned from a light greyish-green coarse stone. Neolithic, circa 3500 to 2100 BC, possibly a Langdale greenstone axe. Oval in section, tapered towards both rounded cutting edge and squared butt end. The axe has some minor later damage, and some chips in the cutting edge. The axe is unsual in that it is divided into two areas - a polished half at the cutting edge end, and a rough, pitted half at the butt end. The two areas are clearly defined, and almost certainly deliberate (the pitting is perhaps to provide the butt with better grip).

Possible ballista ball, or similar. A rough sphere formed from Chalk with flint inclusions, 79.2mm in diameter and 607g in weight. The surface is predominantly rough, with signs of damage (wear, chips and cracks). Difficult to date (ballista balls were in use from the Roman to Medieval periods), the object could also potentially be architectural, and date from any time from Roman to Modern. Neolithic Polished/Ground Stone Axehead. Material is probably a fine grained volcanic rock with small amounts of secondary metamorphic garnet, possibly originating in the Lake District (a substantial number of stone axes found in York originate in the Lake District). The axe has been ground/polished to a smooth but pitted surface. One face of the axehead is flat, the other is ridged, giving a roughly triangular section. The broad end of the axe is present, but the narrow end has broken off (roughly 1/3 of the axehead may be missing).

A large fragment of whetstone, which is probably early-medieval in date. Numberous whetstones made in this material have been found in the East Ridings of Yorkshire in Viking contexts. The stone from which the whetstone has been carved is a fine-grained Mica Schist, sourced in Scandinavia. The stone has been chipped and ground into the whetstone shape and has large chamfered edges. The chamfered edges are still very obvious. Weight: 94g.

Copper alloy buckle plate. The plate is sub-rectangular in plan. There are notches at one edge for the buckle. The face is decorated with a possibly chip-carved figure of a crouching animal with its tail curving over its body. The animal's head is raise toward its tail; its body is stippled. The reverse of the object is undecorated.

An exquisitely finished, polished Neolithic axehead, composed of a fine-grained mudstone, rather than flint. The fine-grained nature of the rock allows it to take such a fine polish. A number of axes exist that have been produced from this rock but the exact source of the rock is uncertain. The axe dates from between circa 3500 BC to 2100 BC. A complete whetstone probably dating to the early-medieval period. The whetstone is rectilinear in plan and relatively square in section. One end narrows slightly, each end is angled slightly, parallel to each other. The stone is a fine-grained, micaceous rock, probably schistose in origin. There appears to be no garnet present or clear schistoze texture which has been clearly apparent in nearly all of the other whetstone seen through the Yorkshire FLO office. A carved soapstone object, which could be a gaming piece of early-medieval to medieval date. The piece is octagonal in shape with seven of the sides decorated with incised cross-hatching. The eighth side, most probably the front of the piece, is carved with a 'Gothic' archway flanked by pillars. The top and the base of the piece are flat with a circular hole running through the centre. The stone is a pale greyish-white in colour with flecks of red occurring in places. The piece is slightly cracked on three sides. The piece is 19.3mm tall and 23.4mm wide and weighs 20.8g.

An almost complete stone axe of Neolithic date. The axe is comprised of a grey-green fine-grained siliceous tuff - a sedimentary volcanic rock possibly from the Great Langdale quarries in Cumbria. The axehead is sub-oval in plan and section with the narrow sides being neatly squared off. A spindle whorl carved from a large animal bone. The object has a wide flattened based and tapers towards the flat top, giving it a conical shape. It has a hole drilled through the centre. The upper surface is rounded and has four lines scratched into it around the central hole, together forming a cross pattern. The bone is a light writish-yellow colour, smoothed with use and age. The whorl is possibly Roman in date, but is more likely to be Early-medieval in date.
