Possible quern fragment, likely from the base. It looks to be made from a pitted greenstone. Due to its findspot context, it is likely to be Iron Age in dating, although secure dating is impossible, given its fragmentary state, but it is likely to be of prehistoric-Iron Age dates. It still has evidence of a grinding surface, and the curvature around the edge of the grinding surface (where this surface meets the edge of the stone) suggests that when intact, the entire object was circular in shape. Using this curvature to estimate the overall diameter of the grinding surface, it wo…

A fragment of stone, possibly a fragment of a quern, of Roman to medieval date, (c.43 AD - 1500 AD). Description: The fragment is broadly triangular in plan and rectangular in cross-section. The longer, curved edge of the triangle shape suggests the outer edge of a quern stone, though this edge is very rough. The other edges are broken. One face is worked. On the worked face, there is a dished indentation whose curved edge is parallel to the line of the curved outer edge. This indentation is probably part of the central hollow of the lower stone of a quern. There is no …

Sandstone quern fragment. A sub-triangular chunk of fine grained red-buff Sandstone, possibly reused as a sharpening stone. The overall form includes a short [40mm] extent of a curved edge, and an aris where two flat surfaces meet at an acute angle opposite the curved side; the intervening surface is flat and probably lightly dished by wear, the fourth large side is broken. These characteristics could point to this being a fragment of a rotary quern of estimated original diameter 260mm. The Romano-British period also saw the use of a wide range of sharpening and polishing stones, which…

Lava quern fragment. A wedge-shaped fragment from a quern stone, rounded by abrasion. One flat face is smoother than the other – though not by much – marking the working side of the stone. The rounded form at the broader end of the fragment may suggest a biconical or hourglass feed hole set centrally to the pair of stones whence this fragment derives. Lava from Eifel in Western Germany was exploited to make quern stones from the Roman period, and these were also the subject of trade between Carolingian Europe and England in the early 9th century. Suggested date: Roman, 43-4…

An incomplete stone Roman quernstone dating to circa AD 43-410. The surviving element is around half of the lower stone. The stone is sandstone. It is a flat quernstone. It is straight sided with a now convex but now uneven based. The grinding surface is flat and heavily worn. The spindle hole is circular in plan with steep, oblique sides. The spindle hole is completely perforated and is 45mm in diameter. Shaffrey notes that flat quernstones came to be in use in southern England during the 1st century AD and are predominantly worked from sandstone (2021). Diameter: 400mm; Th…

Fine-grained compacted buff Sandstone rotary quern fragment, perhaps comprising a little under a quarter of the original conical to hemispherical top stone of a pair, and of an estimated diameter of 210mm. The function is indicated by a relict part of its flat smoothed lower working surface, of length 131mm and width 55mm. Opposite this, on the upper part of the stone, a narrow relict smoothed zone of length 65mm and width 15mm includes a descending curve on its inner edge, marking a central feed hole. This may suggest that the external surface of the stone, or at least that part near…

An incomplete quern stone of Iron Age to Roman date (c.100 BC - AD 100). Description: The stone has a low "bun-shape", common amongst quern stones of this era. The sides are gently curved and sloping and it has a concave top with a central conical perforation forming the hopper. The grinding surface has been worn fairly flat. Approximately a third of the stone is missing, broken in antiquity. There are traces of iron staining, probably from metallic deposits which litter the area. Measurements: 340mm in diameter, 250mm across to the broken side, 110mm high, weight 15.6kg.…

Piece of Hertfordshire Puddingstone quern, of probably first century AD, Roman date. "...Puddingstone is a conglomerate of flint pebbles in a siliceous matrix..." (Major, H. Lucerna 27, p.2.). The fragment retains a worn surface which would have been part of the grinding face. The piece is 59mm in height at its highest point. The length is 95.29mm. The weight is 392g. One of the surfaces is worn, evidence of its former use. The fragment retains a pink/purple colouration owing to the iron oxide in the original rock formation.

Piece of Hertfordshire Puddingstone quern, of probably first century AD, Roman date. "...Puddingstone is a conglomerate of flint pebbles in a siliceous matrix..." (Major, H. Lucerna 27, p.2.). Recovered "eyes-only" during metal detecting on a known Medieval site, and found surrounded by other field stones, perhaps suggesting possibly that the quern fragment was collected from a nearby Roman settlement (where 1st century coins have been recorded by the finder of the quern fragment), and used as part of a possible cobbled surface within the Medieval site. The fragment displays evidence …

A fragment of a rotary quern of probable Roman date. Made from medium to fine grain sandstone with evidence of fine inclusions. The fragment is part of the lower half of the quern and does not extend to the middle hole, so the dimensions of the entire stone are uncertain. The quern stone is flat on the lower side with a convex rounded edge with the lower facebeing wider than the inner side. The upper surface has a groove of approximately 40mm wide extending to the outer edge, presumably to allow the flow of ground flour. The surviving edge is dressed. It is 150mm long, and a maximu…

A mostly complete puddingstone 'beehive' type quern dating to the Late Iron Age or early Roman period, c. 1-160 AD. Ground from a grey conglomerate with large orange, pinkish and black flint inclusions, the quern has suffered some minor losses to its edge though is otherwise preserved in reasonable condition. It is broadly circular in plan and domed, with angled sides that give it a 'beehive' like appearance. It demonstrates a central circular aperture, though this is now clogged at its upper edge with a large broken flint nodule which has apparently been jammed in the aperture- wheth…

Stone quern fragment. A tiny sub-pyramidal fragment of a coarse conglomerate rock with quartz and grey rock inclusions in a buff matrix with one smoothed face - taken to be the working face of a grinding stone - and broken on all other sides. The very limited survival leaves it uncertain whether this was from a thin round stone, one of a pair, or from a heftier beehive quern. Suggested date: Unknown, Iron Age to Early Medieval, 800BC-AD1000. Thickness (in excess of): 50mm, Weight: 114.61gms

Part of a Late Iron Age to Early Roman rotary quern stone. The piece represents just under half of the originally ring-shaped upper stone. The stone is of classic 'bee hive' form, being domed, with a flat underside, and retains part of its inverted-conical hopper, located centrally. Part of a conical handle socket extends horizontally from the outer face, terminating a short distance from the hopper. Another feature of the stone is a recessed perimeter band, which probably represents a seating for a driving strap. The puddingstone itself is a conglomerate comprising small to medium…
