A Neolithic stone axehead (4000 BC-2351 BC) This axehead is sub-triangular in plan and mainly oval in cross-section. From the rounded butt, the sides flare evenly to the asymmetrical cutting edge. It has been pecked and is polished on both faces near the cutting edge. At the butt end it is almost circular in cross-section and mid-way along its length it is oval in cross-section. Close to the cutting edge, where it is polished, it is pointed oval in cross-section. The axehead is greyish green and the polished area has two creamy veins. It also has ferruginous ‘streaks…

An incomplete Neolithic polished flint axehead (4000 BC-2351 BC). About 60% of the implement survives. The cutting edge is missing due to an old transverse break. In plan the butt is rounded and the sides flare to the break where it is pointed-oval in cross-section. In side view it is sub-rectangular but pointed at the butt end. Although the axehead has been polished, much of the flaking can be seen. A large flake scar near the break may have been created when it was broken. This axehead is orange and mid-brown in places with some small off-white areas. Length: 105.0mm; wi…

An almost complete Neolithic stone adze (4000 BC-2351 BC). This adze is sub-triangular in plan and an elongated 'D'-shape in side view. The front (dorsal) face is convex and the rear (ventral) face is flat. From the butt, the sides flare evenly to the curved cutting edge. The lower part of the ventral faces curves inwards towards the cutting edge. The dorsal face is regularly pitted and the ventral face is very smooth. The surface is green with a reddish hue but with a darker area close to the butt on the ventral face. Slight damage on the dorsal face has revealed that the colou…

An incomplete Neolithic polished flint axehead (c. 2700 BC-c. 2351 BC). This axehead is now sub-triangular in plan and is pointed oval in cross-section. Although the grinding has been sufficiently deep to remove the majority of the flaking scars, some do remain close to the butt on one face. A small area of battering at the butt end may indicate that the axehead had also been used as a hammer. There is also a small area of battering at the top of one of the flake scars close to the polished area. The axehead was probably polished overall as a flattened bevelled edge extends the ful…

An incomplete Neolithic polished flint axehead (c. 4000 BC-c. 2351 BC). The butt end is missing due to an oblique break. This axehead is sub-rectangular in plan, roughly 'V'-shaped in side view and pointed oval in cross-section. Towards the truncated oblique butt end it becomes more rounded in cross-section. It has been bi-facially flaked all over and then partially ground and polished. It is possible that the cutting edge broke and was then re-worked and modified for a specific function. The surfaces, including the break at the butt, have a shiny off-white patina with reddis…

An incomplete Neolithic polished flint axehead (4000 BC-2351 BC) This axehead is sub-rectangular in plan and pointed-oval (lenticular) in cross-section. Both long edges taper to a point rather than having side facets. The butt end and the cutting edge are missing due to old breaks. One face exhibits two large negative flake scars, the upper of which has a hinge fracture. These scars probably post-date the polishing. The opposite face has three major negative flake scars and the upper and lower scars appear to post date the polishing. The axehead, including the breaks and negativ…

A complete cast (probably) lead powder measure cap, used for measuring a charge of gunpowder; of probable 17th century date (1600-1700).
